2. DESFORESTATION
• Deforestation, clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or
stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-
forest use.
• One of the country’s environmental problems is the rapid rate at
which trees are cut down.
• These include clearing for farming purposes, ranching and urban
use.
• In these cases, trees are never re-planted.
3. In the Philippines, the major causes of deforestation are:
• Kaingin farming
• Illegal logging
• Conservation of Agricultural lands to housing projects
• Forest fire
• Typhoons
As a consequence of cutting down trees, the following effects could take
place:
• Soil erosion
• Floods
• Decrease in wildlife resources that will eventually lead to extinction
4. KAINGIN FARMING
Slash and burn consists of cutting and
burning of forests or woodlands to
create fields for agriculture or pasture
for livestock, or for a variety of other
purposes. It is sometimes part of
shifting cultivation agriculture, and of
transhumance livestock herding.
5. ILLEGAL LOGGING
Illegal logging is the harvest,
transportation, purchase or sale
of timber in violation of laws.
Illegality may also occur during
transport, such as illegal processing
and export; fraudulent declaration to
customs; the avoidance of taxes and
other charges, and fraudulent
certification.
6. Conservation of Agricultural lands
An agricultural conservation easement is
a voluntary, legally recorded deed
restriction that is placed on a specific
property used for agricultural production.
The goal of an agricultural conservation
easement is to maintain agricultural land
in active production by removing the
development pressures from the land.
Such an easement prohibits practices
which would damage or interfere with
the agricultural use of the land.
7. FOREST FIRE
Wildfires are unwanted,
unplanned fires that burn
in forests and other wildlands, such
as shrub or grass communities. ... On
a single tree, the fire can spread
from ground level branches to mid
branches and eventually to the
crowns (tops) of the trees.
8. TYPHOON
A typhoon is a type of large storm
system having a circular or spiral
system of violent winds, typically
hundreds of kilometers or miles in
diameter. The winds spiral around
a region of low atmospheric
pressure. "Typhoon" is the name of
these storms that occur in the
Western Pacific.
9. SOIL EROSION
SOIL EROSION AND ITS EFFECTS.
The loss of trees, which anchor
the soil with their roots, causes
widespread erosion throughout the
tropics. Only a minority of areas have
good soils, which after clearing are
quickly washed away by the heavy rains
10. FLOODS
Flooding is an overflowing of
water onto land that is normally
dry. Floods can happen during
heavy rains, when ocean waves
come on shore, when snow melts
too fast, or when dams or levees
break.
11. Decrease in wildlife resources
Human activity, including
habitat loss, wildlife trade,
pollution and climate change
contributed to the declines.
