The document outlines the key elements that will be included in the opening of a horror film to conform to genre expectations. It lists that the opening will use: 1) dark lighting and costumes to create an eerie atmosphere, 2) ominous non-diegetic sounds like music and diegetic sounds of doors slamming, and 3) camera techniques like slow zooms and quick cuts to build mystery, tension, and disorient the audience. It also notes the opening will include film credits and target a teenage audience through a scary yet non-explicit sequence that keeps their interest with twists.

Define the key elements you must include in your opening to conform to the expectations of the genre you have chosen
1. Define theKey Elements You Must Include In Your Opening to Conform to the
Expectations of the Genre You Have Chosen
The key elements we will include in our filmopening to conform to the expectations of the
horror genre are listed below;
Mise-en-scene
We will include dark lighting, as well as natural lighting to create a shadowy/eerie
effect, although no harsh/bright lighting will be used.
The characters will wear dark colours such black and grey as these have
connotations of death and evil.
We will also Objects that connote horror- knife, old night dress to create the sense of
danger and a supernatural element.
The Sound we shall use will be Non- diegetic and diegetic sound effects such as: loud
eerie music, over exaggerated slamming of doors, wind and ghostly whispers
Camera Movement
Wide shots- to display the enormity and isolation of the house
Slow zoom- to build up mystery and suspense
High and low angles- to highlight the power of the house contrasted to the
innocence of and vulnerability of the protagonist
Slow and fast movement- to confuse the audience and make them feel cautious and
disorientated
Quick cuts -to create an unnerving and fast paced atmosphere
Editing
Due to our project being a title sequence we will include the credits of; the
Production company, producer, main actor, actors name’s, director and the name of
the film.
Long takes and short takes to create tension and disorientation
2. Audience
The target audience for our film is 12- 21, overall teenagers. Due to this aspect we
will need to make sure the opening sequence is tense and scary enough to conform
to the aspects of a horror film to draw in an older audience, without including
anything that breaks the guidelines of our age rating.
To achieve this we will have to use the dramatic music to build tension. We will not
include explicit footage of violence or any taboo language, our route of supernatural
horror will be a better route that a blood and gore horror.
Lastly, the target audience are from the urban tribe and are self- actualizers. This
means they are always on the prowl for new and exciting things; due to these
characteristics we will use twist and turns in the film to keep their interest as well as
making the characters mirror these attributes with their clothes. They will wear new
and modern clothes, therefore the urban audience will be able to relate to them.
