PROJECT TITLE: ‘BadTrip’
DATE: 09/11/2015
AUDIENCE& OUTLET:
We are targeting our final production towards a 15+ age group with the
key target demographic between the ages of 15-21. This is based off of
our concept, themes, imagery and content within our product. Having
looked at OFCOMand the BBFC guidelines this guided our judgement in
in our target audience. We know therewill be somestrong themes within
our product, including but not limited to; alcohol abuse, drug abuse,
horror, threat, imitable behavior and language. Following the BBFC
guidelines we believe that the 15+ rating would be best suited to our
production.
In terms of our outlet we intend to tap into the market that is best suited
to our target audience. Using a platform like Vimeo means we can
monetize our productand take a 90/10 cut on the sales. We believe this
is the best place to put our product as it will allow for greater creative
freedomof our content. This is why wedidn’tuse YouTubebecausethere
are far more restrictions in terms of content and also we wouldn’t be
directly monetizing our content and would have to rely on sponsorship
and money would only come in fromadvertising.
THEME:
Bad Trip's theme will focus on psychological horror with a sub-genre of
teen drama; our intent is to portray a twisted reality throughout the
filming process whilstmaintaining the teen drama sub-genre. In terms of
the narrativethe characters havebeen tripped by a drug in the beginning
the episode, wewill not glamourizedrugs in our projectin fact wewish to
provethe polar opposite towards the subjectmatter.
REALISATION:
STORY/STRUCTURE
Bad Trip's story will be broken down into a series following every
characters individualtrip of 5 episodes then onto 1 final conclusion
episode which will explain the situation that has happened
throughoutthe series. The firstepisode focuses on Lee an anxious
and darkcharacter,histrip throughouttheepisodewillcompliment
his characteristics and fears. The central storyline is following the
individual trips and building a relationship with each character on
their psychological journeys. Scene 1 introduces the group of
characters the audience will come to learn throughout each
upcoming episode. To begin the scene the characters are around a
table playing drinking games until Lee comes into the party. Before
the episode displays the psychological horror theme we intend it
will have short conversation of the characters to build up a
understanding of who is who. Scene 2 shows our protagonist
exiting the party to a toilet becausehe begins to feel ill. Before this
happens a short conversation between Lee and Mary shows their
interest of each other which links with the teen drama sub-genre.
Strange occurrences happen to Lee as he enters the bathroom his
trip begins. Scene 3 shows the group having blank faces and not
respondingto lee, it mainly focusesonthe trip building into thelees
mind. Scene 4 focuses on the suspenseand fear of the situation by
Lee hearing strangenoises from outside and he investigates these
unexplained circumstances.Scene5 furthermorebuildsthe tension
of the episode after Lee begins to hear thudding and creaking from
upstairsof the houseand each step our protagonisttakes suspense
is built. Scene 6 will be the conclusion of the episode and have a
cliff-hanger to follow onto the next episode.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Asthe cinematographer,I intend to play with shadowsandskewed-
camera angles to enhance the horror aspectof the film. The goal is
to showcasethe main protagonist's fears, by using obscureangles,
pans, and overall camera movements to create a sense of tension
and anxiety for the audience. The party scene is meant to be well-
lit, warm, and easy-going scene. So, it will involve normal camera
movements and angles, however, duringthe "bad trip",the camera
angles, as well as lighting and sound, will shift from warm and
happy-going to dark and sinister. To do so, I will work with the
director, Ryan, to create that sense of tension and anxiety through
camera movements such as following the back of the characters
head, panning from one room to the next, low and high camera-
angles to enhance the spaceof the house, etc. Ultimately, I hopeto
increasetheanticipation ofthe sceneand touchon the internalfear
of the main protagonistthrough the overall look of the film.
SOUND DESIGN
As the Sound operator for this project my role will involve the
recording of sound on and off set during the production and the
editing of the sound for the final cut in post-production. In this
statement of intent I will outline the desired effects I hope to
achieve in terms of sound and how I intend for these effects to
shapethe narrativeas a whole.
As this project is not going to be a themed as a traditional horror
but instead a psychologicalhorror, I havebeen far broader with my
research into audio used in other films. For example a scene in the
film Dredd where one of the characters enters another characters
mind using their powers. In this scene a close up of her eyes
accompanied by the sound of her desperate panicked breaths
create quite a surreal feeling of actually being inside someone’s
mind along with the lack of ambient sound. In this projectI wantto
use this technique to really emphasise that it’s all in the
protagonist’s head. To achieve this I will need to record the actor
playing our protagonist breathing in a similar manner. I will also
haveto workclosely with ourcamera operator Patrickto makesure
we are both working together to create the desired effect.
Regarding the theme of this project, I will need to capture sounds
that are true to the horror element but also sounds that are
consistentwith the psychologicalelement. As thetheme is basically
paranoia and the fear of someone trying to break into the house
our protagonist finds himself in, I intend to record sounds such as
scratching on the windows, creaking floorboards, footsteps and
tapping on the walls around the house. This will be easy enough to
do simply with the Tascam and a mic. The audio that I intend to
record or acquire by other means however willbe intended for the
psychological element of the narrative. These will include sounds
such as voices whispering to our protagonist, ambiguous screeches
and unearthly noises that you might find in sci-fi films.
Accompanying this will be a mixture of creepy ambient noises that
I have found on www.freesound.org.
Through the useof these sounds I hopeto achieve a story that will
not shock the audience into being frightened as most modern day
horrors do but instead to strike a sense of dread and dismay into
viewers through experiencing whatthe protagonistis experiencing
in his struggle to come to grips with the unnerving hallucinations
he is suffers from throughout the episode. If this is accomplished
then what I have intended for the story will also havebeen.
LIGHT DESIGN
During our horror episodes it is my role to create the stereotypical
horror lightning. This therefore will involve low key lighting and
have very little natural light; this will be made easier as we plan to
film during the evening. If on location, I find light does come in I
plan to block this. During our scenes I want to play with the dark
and soft shadows effects we learnt during our tech demos. I will
try to cast shadows onto walls and the shadows will darker to
coincide with the horror theme. These shadows willconnoteto our
audience that there is something in the house following our main
character other than our housemates.
Three-point lighting will be my main plan during head shots and
wide shots. I will follow the stereotypical low key lighting and only
light half of the face, and leave negative space in darkness so our
antagonistcan creep into frameand keep our audience in the dark.
I will use the ‘orange’ light, that comes fromour dedo light, as the
main light, however I will experiment with colour gels in our fill
lights to connote harsh cold night time, using the ‘moonlight’ gel.
My favourite tool is the reflector, using the orange reflector I can
bounce light and create shadows where needed. I will try to play
with filler lights lower than our key lights; this low angle lighting will
keep our subjects faces lit and keep the room around them darker
for the intense atmosphere.
PRODUCTION DESIGN
For the design of our production, I have been inspired by many
stereotypical traits of horror films. For our location, we intend to
shoot at a farm house with an old-fashioned interior design. The
old wallpaper and structure of the house echoes back to classic
horror films such as TheShining (1980), and willhopefully establish
the old-time feel of the horror genre. As the script says, a
Halloween party is taking place, so generic decorations will beused
to dress the set. Additionally, empty bottles and red cups will be
used to display the party theme. (Red cups hide the fact alcohol
isn’t being consumed by the actors, and additionally they don’t
have copyrightlabels or brands.)
As for costume design, I have read the script and designed outfits
foreach individualcharacter,whichshouldhopefully givean insight
as to what their character is, e.g. Mary is supposed to be a hippie,
so I intend to have her dressed in hippie inspired clothing. Due to
the fact it’s a Halloween party, I intend to have elements of
Halloween costume in the characters’ outfits.

I will use the ‘orange’ light, that comes fromour dedo light, as the main light, however I will experiment with colour gels in our fill lights to connote harsh cold night time, using the ‘moonlight’ gel. My favourite tool is the reflector, using the orange reflector I can bounce light and create shadows where needed. I will try to play with filler lights lower than our key lights; this low angle lighting will

PRODUCTION DESIGN For the design of our production, I have been inspired by many stereotypical traits of horror films. For our location, we intend to shoot at a farm house with an old-fashioned interior design. The old wallpaper and structure of the house echoes back to classic horror films such as TheShining (1980), and willhopefully establish the old-time feel of the horror genre. As the script says, a Halloween party is taking place, so generic decorations will beused to dress the set. Additionally, empty bottles and red cups will be used to display the party theme. (Red cups hide the fact alcohol isn’t being consumed by the actors, and additionally they don’t have copyrightlabels or brands.) As for costume design, I have read the script and designed outfits foreach individualcharacter, whichshouldhopefully givean insight as to what their character is, e.g. Mary is supposed to be a hippie, so I intend to have her dressed in hippie inspired clothing. Due to the fact it’s a Halloween party, I intend to have elements of Halloween costume in the characters’ outfits. EDITING
