Title: UNFORGIVING
Group: Erica, Bruna, Tyriq and Christopher
The Film: UNFORGIVING
The title of our film is called, ‘ UNFORGIVING’.
The synopsis of our film is The Andersons Family move into a new house, little did they know
there is an evil presence of a little girl whose innocence was lost due to abuse, she was
murdered many years ago by her parents and her corpse was left in this house. Her spirit
now haunts, and in a turnaround of events she will do everything she can to let the
Andersons Family know, she's here to stay because sometimes ‘evil’ is the only solution.
The concept of basing our story on a family comes from the film ‘The Conjuring’, as we can
see below the opening title sequence establishes the family that gets haunted.
Type of title sequence: Discrete Title
The two title sequences that have influenced us in our
work are Insidious and The Conjuring both these titles
have black and white images creating a mysterious effect
and making it look vintage.
In Insidious the opening title sequence, uses the basic
horror colour schemes. Mainly red, black and white during
the title sequence. Also there is establishing shots of the
house and the inside of the house where the film is set.
The Conjuring opening title sequence is very simple, the
font is white and stands out in the dark backgrounds.
However there is images telling a story in the background
these different cuts introduce the audience to the
characters in the film and leads the audience into the film.
As a group we came to the conclusion that we wanted to use
children and base our main idea on this theme. So we looked for
examples of horror films that use children being possessed and
haunted. Influences to our production is Insidious and Sinister.
Both these films have an aspect of a child being possessed and
Sinister is about children haunting.
These themes would be interesting to do and it seems like an
opening sequence that would grasp the audience's attention and
make them engrossed in what is happening because when
people think of ‘children’, they automatically think innocent,
sweet and pure however, if in our opening title sequence the
children are the ‘evil’ then it will challenge these ideas.
Genre (sub-genre) : Possession, Haunting, Supernatural,
and Occult
Representation
One character we will introduce is a little girl who haunts a house that has been abandoned for years.
She normally holds a teddy bear she is normally on her own. The teddy bear is used to show her
innocence as she is still a child above all the evil. One social group we have in the title sequence is
someone who is isolated and has no one to look up to and can be easily lead.
Universal studios will distribute our film as they specialise in the production of horror movies and have
made many successful horror films such as ‘Psycho 2’ which they have made many versions of because it is
doing so well. Universal is also known for making some of the first horror films like dracula . Universal have
good links and connections with other promoters around the world which would help our title sequence get
some attention and attract an audience. This will also allow our title sequence to get more global coverage
and recognition especially as universal studios are involved which will be eye catching for many horror film
fans. Bloomhouse is also a popular production company for horror films as they have helped out producing
‘Sinister’ and ‘Paranormal Activity’.
Institutional Detail
Audience Detail
Our target audience is primarily targeted at a younger audience of ages around 15-25, the reason for this is that
young adults and teenagers enjoy horror films, rather than an older audience. Also, our target audience includes
both genders.
The secondary target audience is aimed at individuals of a specific interest, for example individuals that enjoy a
sense of mystery and illusion. Also we are targeting at groups of people, mainly groups of teenagers as it is almost
seen as a social event to go and watch a horror movie with a group.
Our film will therefore appeal to our target audience by including violence, as well as including a lot of mystery
creating an enigma and build up of suspense.
We will also share our production through social media, by publicising it on websites such as Twitter, Youtube and
Facebook .
This is Kelly,
she is 17,
and she
enjoys
watching
horror films.
MISE EN SCENE
Mise en scene – Location and Setting
The location we will use for our opening sequence is dark rooms, Children's room, children
parks.
The setting will be in London in the 21st Century.
Mise en scene – props, make-up, costumes
Props
- Candles
- Documents - Birth certificates etc
- Teddy Bear
Costumes
- Nightgown: For little scary girl, one of the classic forms of ghosts or haunting within
paranormal research and fiction is the white ghost.
- Casual Clothing - for new family
Make-up
- Dark eyeshadow
- Blood
Sound Design - Which title sequences have influenced
your sound design?
The Conjuring (Discrete Title sequence)
This title sequence has influenced our production because of its simplicity
yet gives the audience a sense of what the story will be about. The text is
white and simple, there is also a slow eerie soundtrack in the background,
that creates an atmosphere. With this soundtrack it makes it more
mysterious as it is creating suspense and the audience don’t know what's
coming.
Insidious (Discrete Title sequence)
This title sequence also influenced our production because the music in the
title sequence is also very scary. It is very high pitched at times almost
sounds like a scream.
Title credits
What will they look like?
- The font we will use for our title credits will be very simple and bold. The
colour of the text will be a blood red, because the backgrounds will have
low key lighting therefore it will stand out and create a very dramatic
atmosphere. The colour red also means warning and danger therefore the
audience will know the genre of the film through the typography.
- Our title credits will be conventional as they are quite typical for the
horror genre.

Cinematic Detail
The idea of our film is based on a family (The Andersons Family) who move into a new house, little did they know there is an evil presence of a little girl, who
many years ago was murdered by her parents and her corpse was left in this house, her spirits haunts, and she will do everything she can to let the Andersons
Family know, she's here to stay.
Our key camera and editing decisions include, close-up shots, establishing shots, over-the-shoulder shot, extreme close up shots and reaction shot. Also the
opening scene will begin with long shots with few transitions to set a slow smooth pace and as the opening scene continues the shots will become shorter and
the transition will increase in number, as the opening scene becomes more dramatic. And it will end with a few long shots to build tension, followed by shorter
ones, to represent the end of the opening scene.
The titles will be placed either on a blank screen or on the top right hand corner of the action in the show.
The order of the title sequence will be as followed:

Production Schedule
After the Christmas Holidays, we will all be meeting up as a group
on different days in our free time and during our media lesson, we
will be going to an abandoned building, the woods etc to record
our scenes. We’re going to get items such as teddy bears and give
them a “spooky” or “creepy” effect to bring out the theme of
possessed children which is the theme of our title sequence.
Editing would occur once we’ve completed filming different shots
and we are ready to put them all together to create a piece. This
would happen in college and during our free time in the editing
suite.
Risk Assessment
There are some risks with what we want to film as we want to go to an abandoned
building but will need to make sure it is 100% safe before we enter, we need to
make sure we lay the candles out correctly and that the child will not come into
contact with them at all.

  • 14. Production Schedule After the Christmas Holidays, we will all be meeting up as a group on different days in our free time and during our media lesson, we will be going to an abandoned building, the woods etc to record our scenes. We’re going to get items such as teddy bears and give them a “spooky” or “creepy” effect to bring out the theme of possessed children which is the theme of our title sequence. Editing would occur once we’ve completed filming different shots and we are ready to put them all together to create a piece. This would happen in college and during our free time in the editing suite.
  • 15. Risk Assessment There are some risks with what we want to film as we want to go to an abandoned building but will need to make sure it is 100% safe before we enter, we need to make sure we lay the candles out correctly and that the child will not come into contact with them at all.
