Theories
1. Vladimir Propp’s character theory
He states that every film has 7 characters:
1. The hero (helps princess)
2. The villain (wants to
destroy everything)
3. The donor (gives something
i.e. Information)
4. The dispatcher (sends the
hero on a mission)
5. The false hero (nice at the
start then turns out evil)
6. The helper (hero’s helper)
7. The princess (needs help)
In Harry Potter the 7 characters are
:
1. Hero – Harry Potter
2. The helper – Ron Weasley
/Hermione Granger
3. The Villain- Lord Voldemort
4. The Princess – Ginny Weasley
5. The donor – The
Phoenix/sorting hat
6. The false Hero – Draco Malfoy
7. The Dispatcher -
Hagrid/Dumbledore
Tzvetan Todorov Narrative Theory
He believes that there are five stages to a narrative.
1. Equilibrium (normal life)
2. Disruptions (something
happens)
3. Recognition of the disruption
(characters recognise that
something happened)
4. Attempt to repair disruption
(try to fix the situation)
5. New equilibrium (there is a
new normal life)
In Harry Potter the stages are:
1. Harry lives with adoptive
parents
2. He receives a letters from
Hogwarts and flies off with
Hagrid to go to school. There
is a troll in the school.
3. They find the troll and shut
down the school.
4. Harry and Ron go back to kill
the troll and get Hermione.
5. They kill the troll and have
Hermione safe. The school is
now open again.
Vladimir Propp has
thoroughly studied fairytales
to come up with this theory.
