How does your film opening represent particular social
1.
2. Location
Our characters are scientists in a lab which suggests that
they are middle class instead of working class as they
must be educated. The location and the mise en scene of
the papers of the papers on the desk imply some sort of
human testing although with the location alone it is
unclear what the testing is on.
3. Ethnicity
In horror films, white characters can often be
represented as successful in society either being doctors
or scientists. They are normally presented as strong and
confident and determined like Dr. Ellie Sattler in Jurassic
Park.
4. Ethnicity
However our white female character is similar in being a
an educated woman however she lacks the qualities of
the stereotype white female in not showing
determination and being carefree and relaxed. She
seems to be more talkative and social than driven to her
work.
5. Ethnicity
Black males are usually depicted as being sinister and
normally the antagonist of the films usually in crime
films. However in horror films the black character seems
like the one to make a mistake first and get killed first. In
our film this happens as well. This is often a heroic
sacrifice or to awaken something inside the lead
character. An example is Kincaid in Nightmare on Elm
Street 4 and our film.
6. Gender & Age
Men are usually shown to be dominant and powerful in
horror films. They seem to be willing to fight off a
creature and often running behind a female so he would
be taken first rather than the female. An example is Dr
Van Helsing in Dracula (1958)..
7. Gender
Our male character is shown to be determined to get the
work done although not being successful. While the
female character is talking to him he is clearly distracted
by his work. However he doesn’t fight off the creature
which could be due to not having enough time to assess
what's going on.
8. Gender
In horror films the main female character tends to be
young mainly teenagers. They are often determined and
strong and beat ‘unbeatable’ odds to try and survive. An
example of this is Wendy Christensen in Final
Destination 3.
9. Gender
Our Female character acts laidback and more sociable
than determined which contradicts the stereotype in
horror films. She doesn’t try to fight the monster, she
was just in the right place at the right time and survived
the attack.
