Definition of Evaluation
• An attempt to weigh and appropriately
value something in terms of merit and
worth. (Marsh and Willis,2007)
• Merit – how well something is done
• Worth – the importance of doing
something
Cont.
• The systematic assessment of the worth
or merit of some object. (Stufflebeam and
Shinkfield, 1985)
Cont.
• An information gathering process, and it is
used as a basis for decision making
purposes (Lee Sook Mee, 1993)
Definition of Assessment
• Any of a variety of procedures used to
obtain information on students’
performance
Cont.
• Evaluation can be on-going evaluation
while a course of studies is pursued and
evaluation during final stages of student’s
studies.
• Formative vs summative
Cont.
• Informal – continuous and less obtrusive.
Eg. questioning – ‘delving’, using other
teachers’ record, observing, listening,
making mental notes, eavesdropping
• Formal – planned and usually quite
obtrusive. Eg. weekly tests, assignments
