Nicotine use is a leading preventable cause of death in the world, directly and indirectly responsible for 440,000 deaths per year. The health problems
that result in tobacco use tally an annual of $75 billion in direct medical costs (Slovic 36). That money spent on medical problems for smokers should
be used to pay for more important things in our society such as schools, libraries, childcare, etc.
Because it takes approximately eight seconds for nicotine to reach the brain and each cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals, tobacco is one of the most
addictive drugs in the United States. ("TIPS" 8). Dependency is defined as reliance for a substance that you can't live without. Smokers have a

Laryngeal cancer shows up in the vocal cords. Symptoms of this cancer include cough, coughing blood, and hoarseness. Oral cancer arises in the
mouth and throat. It's most common in people who chew tobacco. Esophageal cancer is in the esophagus which links the oral cavity to the stomach.
Pancreatic cancer is in the pancreas which is a secreatory organ situated at the rear of the abdominal cavity behind the stomach. Being bathed in the
tobacco carcinogens which are in the blood and then concentrated in the urine causes kidney cancer. Cancer of the urinary bladder is in the bladder's
surface, and the earliest symptom is bleeding. Respiratory diseases cause by smoking includes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory
morbidity, emphysema, and respiratory infections.
Cigarette smokers are two to four times more likely to develop coronary heart disease than non–smokers, and tobacco use doubles risk for stroke. It
also causes reduced circulation by narrowing the blood vessels, and it causes premature wrinkles because it constricts the oxygen and warmth from all
parts of the body so the skin ages faster.
Another huge tobacco–related health problem is secondhand smoke. It is known to cause approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths and 35,000 heart
disease deaths in nonsmokers each year. By definition it is a mixture of smoke given off by the burning end of tobacco products and the smoke exhaled
by smokers. Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000

Tobacco
Tobacco is one of the leading preventable causes of death in the United States.
Nicotine, which is an alkaloid derived from the tobacco plant, is a potent chemical that has powerful effects on the human body, especially when
administered rapidly or at high doses. Prenatal exposure to nicotine is associated with adverse reproductive outcomes, including altered neural structure
and functioning, cognitive deficits, and behavior problems in the offspring (9). At least 20% – 30% of pregnant women are estimated to smoke
cigarettes, although smoking is associated with low birth weight, prematurity and infant mortality. In the United States, smoking accounts annually for
estimated fetal deaths ranging from 19,000 to 141,000, for 1,900...show more content...
A similar study by Lauren S. Wakschlag, onmaternal smoking during pregnancy and the risk of conduct disorder in boys, revealed that mothers who
smoked more than half a pack of cigarettes daily during pregnancy were significantly more likely to have offspring who met DSM–III–R diagnostic
criteria for Conduct Disorder during the preadolescent or adolescent years than women who did not smoke or smoked only occasionally during
pregnancy. These findings support previous work showing that maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with increased rates of preschool and
school–age behavior problems and delinquency in the offspring.
The relationship between smoking and low birth weight, prematurity, and miscarriage has been well established. The effects of nicotine are seen in
every trimester of pregnancy, from increased spontaneous abortions in the first trimester to increased premature delivery rates and decreased birth
weights in the final trimester. In 1957, Simpson first noted in an observational study of 7,499 patients that the incidence of premature delivery, as
defined by a birth weight less than 2,500g, was twice as great for the smoking mother as compared with the nonsmoking mother (5). A similar study by
Walsh concluded that the smoking mother is at two–fold increased risk for delivering a low birth weight infant than her nonsmoking

About 5.6 million of Americans younger than 18 years will likely die from a tobacco–related illness if tobacco use persists at the current rate among
youth in the United States (1). Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of mortality and disease in the United States (2). Approximately 480, 000
Americans die from tobacco–related diseases, while greater than 16 million Americans suffer from at least one illness caused by tobacco, each year (2).
Tobacco products are made entirely or partly from the nicotine–rich leaves materials which are processed by drying and fermentation, prepared to be
smoked, chewed, or snuffed by an individual (3). The tobacco product use are Cigarettes, Cigars, Hookahs, Electronic cigarettes, Pipe tobacco, Bidis,
and smokeless tobacco (10). All these tobacco products contain highly addictive psychoactive agent called nicotine (3). Since tobacco use often
begins during teenage years and early adolescent, hence, preventing the use of tobacco among youths in middle and high school is critical to ending
the tobacco epidemic in the United States (1). Studies have shown that 9 out of 10 tobacco smokers first attempted smoking by 18 years of age while
greater than 3,200 American youths aged 18 years and below smoked their first cigarette, and 2100 youths and young adults became addicted users (4).
However, this has reportedly led American middle and high school youths to become susceptible to one form of tobacco products or the other and are

Tobacco has been around for many years, and it should be stopped, but can the economy handle it. The tobacco is reaching young children, and not to
mention the nonsmokers as well. The medical effects alone should convince people to stop smoking. Even if the people wanted to quit, it's hard
because they are already addicted. If the health doesn't stop people from smoking the cost should because this year the tax on tobacco has gone up
dramatically. So now the cost is weakening our pockets. The only ones that win in the tobacco field are the Tobacco Company, because they make all

"Environmental tobacco smoke–the secondhand cigarette smoke breathed by nonsmokers is a known carcinogen and the most dangerous
environmental pollutant."(Waxman 1995) Surprisingly secondhand smoke causes as many deaths as the tobacco smokers do. "Most people die
from secondhand smoke each year than from car accidents."(Waxman 1995) There are a lot of reasons that causes the deaths from secondhand
smoke. "Lung cancer is the best known risk from secondhand smoke."(Wilson 1997) The simple smoke from a cigarette is more complex then it
really looks. "Each time a person breaths in smoke about a million particles of very tiny complex materials are breathed in and only 20% of that is
breathed out."(Hyde 1990) From these little millions of particles is the reason it causes problems for the human body. The main material in the some is
nicotine. "Nicotine is an alkaloid poison found in
Tobacco leaves that defends the plant against insect attacks. Nicotine affects the nervous system."(Mccuen 1997) Nobody wants that in his or her
bodies. But people still light up every day knowing well enough that the tobacco smoke will kill them eventually or cause permanent damage to their
bodies. The reason is because the nicotine in the cigarettes is very addictive, let me tell you from my personal experience that it is very addictive. As
time goes by a person tolerance goes up. "Tolerance of nicotine begins with the first does of nicotine, people

Tobacco's origin is very deep that "tobacco is a plant that grows natively in North and South America. It is in the same family as the potato, pepper
and the poisonous nightshade, a very deadly plant" (University of Dayton). When Christopher Columbus came to this new world in 1492, he was
offered some sort of tobacco leaves by the American Indians that he did not know about this plant (University of Dayton). After this invention, sailors
and traders brought it to Europe, and they planted it all over the European soils. It grew in the European soils like cats and dogs. At that time, tobacco
became famous because it was thought that it "could cure almost anything, from bad breath to cancer" (University of Dayton). Moreover, "in 1571, a

sent millions of cigarettes to the soldiers for free, and when these soldiers came home, the companies had a steady stream of loyal customers"
(University of Dayton). But, later, scientists and doctors found out that it was very bad to human health, for example, "in 1953, Dr. Ernst L. Wynders

Speech on Tobacco Use Essay
Speech on Tobacco Use Fellow Students,
We all know that tobacco kills. In this speech, I want to tell everyone that tobacco kills non–smokers as well. Let us be clear about it. Second–hand
smoke also kills.
It is well documented through solid science that exposure to second–hand smoke causes cancer and contributes to various lung and heart diseases. It

Reality however, is different. We are all exposed to second–hand smoke nearly everywhere we go; in cafes, in airports, in shopping centres, often in the
workplace. In countries where there are no controls on smoking, people are exposed to it all day, every day. So are people who work in restaurants or
bars.
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 700 million, or almost half, of the world's children are exposed to second–hand smoke.
In spite of what science tells us, however, in many places it is considered so acceptable to smoke, and so rude and unaccommodating to protest, that we
dare not speak out against second–hand smoke.
The time has come for us to speak out. We have a right to breathe clean air. We have a right to good health and to protect our friends and family. We
need to clear the air of second–hand smoke.
Today, we are calling for a ban on smoking in public places.
Such a ban offers a comprehensive solution to keeping the air clean and safe for all people, both smokers and non–smokers. It puts the emphasis on
people's right to health and helps to make smoking the exception rather than the norm. From Canada to Thailand, Australia to South Africaand Ireland,
wherever smoking bans have been put into effect they have also been shown to help people quit smoking.
The wider the bans on smoking in public places are, the

Tobacco And Its Impact On Tobacco
As the second largest cause of death in the world, Tobacco has put itself at the top of social problems. Looking though out history, tobacco was
widely accepted in American society as well as all around the world. There were three major changes in society that aided in the transformation of
tobacco from a social norm into a major social issue. The major changes of technology enhancement of cigarette production, society's views on tobacco
intake, and the improvements of scientific knowledge on health issues tobacco causes have all led to the social problem tobacco has formed.
Tobacco is native to both North and South American continents and is considered one of the most important cash crops in the United States. European
explorers from the fifteenth and sixteenth century discovered tobacco through the Native Americans who used the resource as medicine and as a
hallucinogen. The plant was brought back to Europe where it instantly became a drug of choice. Rulers quickly banned tobacco, but its economic
benefits and vast popularity compelled acceptance. It spread throughout the flourishing world and became the foundation for the growth of the
American economy. Colonist started to grow and sell their own product; it became so important that tobacco was a legal currency in Maryland and
Virginia. Because tobacco became a high paying farm crop, the rapid growth of production led to an increase of slave trade. Slaves became the
backbone of the tobacco economy. Without them, there

Tobacco and Addiction
One of the most serious and expensive problems in the U.S. is the addiction of tobacco smoking. People who are addicted to smoking tobacco are
teenagers, young adults, and older adults. The number of people addicted to smoking tobacco has increased highly over the last 5 years. Social
problems and media are major reasons for this increase.
Smokers are every where with their foggy sphere of cigarette smoke. The large amount of cigarette butts that could be found in the streets, parks, play
grounds, bus stops, and other places is one proof of the increased numbers of smokers. High school students can be seen smoking tobacco on their way
home. College students also can be seen on campus smoking...show more content...
Not forgetting anti smoke organizations, such as FAST–Fight Against Smoking Team–, that warns smokers about tobacco as well as helps them quit
smoking. The other percentage, 28 percent, had almost no info and organizations to warn them about the dangers of tobacco. Though, they have the
small percentage. "We're seeing an intense amount of smoking, despite everything the anti–tobacco industry has done," says Cincinnati pediatrician
Richard Heyman, chairman of the committee on substance abuse of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ("The Re–hooked Generation" OnHealth: 04)
So, what causes this generation to smoke heavily despite all the money spent and effort put in to warn them from the dangers?
One factor that helped the increase of smokers is business owners. Recently some places where turned into Non Smoking zones by law, such as,
restaurants, bars, and many other public areas. This didn't help decrease the number of smokers, because restaurants along with the other places took a
step by designated areas for smokers. This step, which was intended to save business owners from losing their cigarette–smoking customers, made the
number of smokers steady. Another factor is the media. Almost every movie ever produced has a hero who lights up a cigarette during an action scene
or a tense emotional scene.

Teen Smoking Essay
One of the largest issues today is adolescent smoking. According to a heath based website, nearly 90% of adult smokers start while they are still teens
and they never intend to get hooked. They may start by bumming a cigarette or two from a friend at a party, and then go on to buying an occasional
pack. Soon they realize that they can't go without that pack. They've gotten used to reaching for a cigarette first thing in the morning, after meals, or
during any stressful time. They become addicted, both physically and psychologically. According to the American Lung Association, each day 6,000
children under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette. Almost 2,000 of them will become regular smokers – that's 757, 000 new smokers annually!

These teens may think that smoking shows that they are old enough to make their own decisions.
To make matters worse, the tobacco companies are making millions from teen smokers. Tobacco companies use advertising to manipulate both teens
and adults. They present images that are hard to shake, even when you know the truth. Have you ever seen a cigarette ad where people are wrinkled,
middle–aged or coughing and in the hospital dying of lung cancer? Of course not! In most ads, smokers are shown the way that teens would like to be:
attractive and hip, sophisticated and elegant, or rebellious.
A 2002 study performed by the Research Triangle Institute states that the tobacco companies make 1.8 billion dollars annually from underage sales.
It is interesting that they are making such large profits when it is illegal for a person under the age of 18 to purchase cigarettes. A recent survey by
the The American Lung Association indicated that among students under 18 years old who were current smokers, 69.4% reported never being asked
for proof of age when buying cigarettes in a store, and 62.4% were not refused purchase because of their age.
The tobacco industry kills more people in North America from Monday to Thursday of each week than the terrorists murdered in total on September
11, 2001. That sounds unrealistic, doesn't it? Well, smoking is an epidemic that affects us all, whether you are a smoker or you aren't. In order to stop

Essay on Addictions to Smoking and Alcohol
Addictions to Smoking and Alcohol
A lot of people suffer from the consequences of smoking and drinking alcohol, which often leads to addiction. The word 'addiction' is a very powerful
word in this sense, as it means the physical and psychological craving for a substance that develops into a dependency, and continues even though it is
causing the addicted person physical, psychological and social harm. The disease of addiction is chronic and progressive; it can lead to extremely
dangerous outcomes. This applies to both smoking, and alcohol addiction.
Smoking is not just a bad habit, but also a complex addiction. Experts believe that nicotine exerts its powerful addictive effects by...show more content...
Smoking increases the risk of suffering from heart diseases, stroke, other lung diseases and other respiratory illnesses. The body develops horrific
reactions to the daily onslaught of smoking. It damages the blood vessels in the legs and arms for example, which lead to restricted circulation and
even amputation of the limbs. Also, a smoker addict will eventually start getting eye irritations (which leads to blindness), foul smelling hair, hair loss
and even start developing a loss of smell. All of these reactions are due to the dangerous chemicals cigarettes contain. One example of such a chemical
is hydrogen cyanide, which can lead to headaches, nausea, dizziness and vomiting.
Whilst breaking the physical addiction to nicotine is hard, for many smokers breaking the habit – the psychological addiction – is much harder. This is
mainly because smoking is likely to have become deeply ingrained over many years, and has therefore become an integral part of many emotional
occasions. Sad or unhappy, bored or having to concentrate hard, happy and relaxed with friends – cigarettes are likely to have played a part in almost
all of these situations. Some people smoke because of the way cigarettes are advertised, and where they are shown. Another reason why

Smoking cigarettes can have such an harmful effect on the individuals who abuse it and the people who are in around them. A cigarette abuser is

Tobacco is the common name of the plant Nicotiana tabacum and to a limited extent Nicotiana rustica and the cured leaf that is used, usually after
aging and processing in various ways for smoking, chewing, snuffing and the extraction of nicotine, the principal alkaloid of tobacco.(4) The species

N. tabacum has a uniquely high proportion of alkaloids occurring as nicotine and is considered to have survived as a species by man's protection.

N. sylvestris contributes one genome, but agreement on the other contributor is not agreed upon. Artificial creation of hybrids which results in

Botany
Tobacco is normally grown as an annual and is potentially a woody, shrub like perennial. The tobacco plant has a very shallow root system which
provides poor anchorage for the more extensive above ground development. The N. tabacum types are one of the smaller species of tobacco varieties.
The leaves supply the most important economic value of the plant and are given the most attention by botanists. Although there is variation in leaf size
and shape there is general uniformity of distribution, size and shape within cultivated types. Between types, size and shape may vary considerably but
not in distribution. The characters which may include leaf shape

THIS IS A PAPER REGARDING THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY (3 PAGES). The Killing Business? This paper is about the tobacco industry. Some

will look at the issue in regards to the industry from both consumer and producer points of perspective with fairness and equality in reach. With an

But lowering the tar also meant lowering the nicotine because this method affected both aspects. So the industry generated a new breed of tobacco
plants. The nicotine levels of the new flue–cured, Y–1, and rustica tobacco plants were 6% of the plant's body weight. Before, tobacco only had
2%–3.5% nicotine. Chewing tobacco and snuff products have always contained fiberglass in them. These flecks of glass pierced gums and lips to
allow nicotine to flow into the pores making it more addictive. The industry has since made the fiberglass obsolete and replaced it with actual
nicotine crystals. These crystals penetrate the gums and dissolve inside of your jaw. Basically, consumers are now getting approximately double
the nicotine in smoking and smokeless tobacco than had previously. The government has passed laws that prevent youth from purchasing tobacco
goods. The legal age for acquirement of tobacco is 18. Does that in itself ward away potential teen tobacco users? To a certain degree, it works very
effectively. Consumers under the legal age have no way around this law. However, there are some marketers that sell to underage tobacco users. But
the industry is hardly to blame for that. The President devised a plan to raise prices of tobacco over the next four years in an attempt to discourage
tobacco consumers. Realistically, no proposition such as that could ever be more ignorant and bemused. This scheme only gives rise to the industry.

Cigarette smoking has been known for years to impair health of smokers and nonsmokers exposed to smoke in various ways such as by damaging the

In 1994, David Kessler, commissioner of the FDA, launched an attack on tobacco companies, claiming they deliberately increased nicotine levels in

forming nitrosamines than a nonsmoker. (F4)
ADDICTIVE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE AND TOLERANCE TO NICOTINE
There is much experimental evidence that nicotine is an addictive drug and that it causes a level of tolerance in lab animals and humans, through its
effect on the CNS. For a drug to produce dependence, it must rapidly enter in to the blood steam, must be psychoactive, must readily cross the blood
brain barrier and the psychosomatic effects must be related to levels of drug in the brain. All of the above is true for nicotine. Tolerance is when, after
repeated doses, a given dose of a

Research Paper On Tobacco

  • 1. Research Paper on Tobacco Tobacco Nicotine use is a leading preventable cause of death in the world, directly and indirectly responsible for 440,000 deaths per year. The health problems that result in tobacco use tally an annual of $75 billion in direct medical costs (Slovic 36). That money spent on medical problems for smokers should be used to pay for more important things in our society such as schools, libraries, childcare, etc. Because it takes approximately eight seconds for nicotine to reach the brain and each cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals, tobacco is one of the most addictive drugs in the United States. ("TIPS" 8). Dependency is defined as reliance for a substance that you can't live without. Smokers have a physical and physiological reliance...show more content... Laryngeal cancer shows up in the vocal cords. Symptoms of this cancer include cough, coughing blood, and hoarseness. Oral cancer arises in the mouth and throat. It's most common in people who chew tobacco. Esophageal cancer is in the esophagus which links the oral cavity to the stomach. Pancreatic cancer is in the pancreas which is a secreatory organ situated at the rear of the abdominal cavity behind the stomach. Being bathed in the tobacco carcinogens which are in the blood and then concentrated in the urine causes kidney cancer. Cancer of the urinary bladder is in the bladder's surface, and the earliest symptom is bleeding. Respiratory diseases cause by smoking includes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory morbidity, emphysema, and respiratory infections. Cigarette smokers are two to four times more likely to develop coronary heart disease than non–smokers, and tobacco use doubles risk for stroke. It also causes reduced circulation by narrowing the blood vessels, and it causes premature wrinkles because it constricts the oxygen and warmth from all parts of the body so the skin ages faster. Another huge tobacco–related health problem is secondhand smoke. It is known to cause approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths and 35,000 heart disease deaths in nonsmokers each year. By definition it is a mixture of smoke given off by the burning end of tobacco products and the smoke exhaled by smokers. Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Tobacco Essay Tobacco Tobacco is one of the leading preventable causes of death in the United States. Nicotine, which is an alkaloid derived from the tobacco plant, is a potent chemical that has powerful effects on the human body, especially when administered rapidly or at high doses. Prenatal exposure to nicotine is associated with adverse reproductive outcomes, including altered neural structure and functioning, cognitive deficits, and behavior problems in the offspring (9). At least 20% – 30% of pregnant women are estimated to smoke cigarettes, although smoking is associated with low birth weight, prematurity and infant mortality. In the United States, smoking accounts annually for estimated fetal deaths ranging from 19,000 to 141,000, for 1,900...show more content... A similar study by Lauren S. Wakschlag, onmaternal smoking during pregnancy and the risk of conduct disorder in boys, revealed that mothers who smoked more than half a pack of cigarettes daily during pregnancy were significantly more likely to have offspring who met DSM–III–R diagnostic criteria for Conduct Disorder during the preadolescent or adolescent years than women who did not smoke or smoked only occasionally during pregnancy. These findings support previous work showing that maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with increased rates of preschool and school–age behavior problems and delinquency in the offspring. The relationship between smoking and low birth weight, prematurity, and miscarriage has been well established. The effects of nicotine are seen in every trimester of pregnancy, from increased spontaneous abortions in the first trimester to increased premature delivery rates and decreased birth weights in the final trimester. In 1957, Simpson first noted in an observational study of 7,499 patients that the incidence of premature delivery, as defined by a birth weight less than 2,500g, was twice as great for the smoking mother as compared with the nonsmoking mother (5). A similar study by Walsh concluded that the smoking mother is at two–fold increased risk for delivering a low birth weight infant than her nonsmoking Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Tobacco And Tobacco About 5.6 million of Americans younger than 18 years will likely die from a tobacco–related illness if tobacco use persists at the current rate among youth in the United States (1). Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of mortality and disease in the United States (2). Approximately 480, 000 Americans die from tobacco–related diseases, while greater than 16 million Americans suffer from at least one illness caused by tobacco, each year (2). Tobacco products are made entirely or partly from the nicotine–rich leaves materials which are processed by drying and fermentation, prepared to be smoked, chewed, or snuffed by an individual (3). The tobacco product use are Cigarettes, Cigars, Hookahs, Electronic cigarettes, Pipe tobacco, Bidis, and smokeless tobacco (10). All these tobacco products contain highly addictive psychoactive agent called nicotine (3). Since tobacco use often begins during teenage years and early adolescent, hence, preventing the use of tobacco among youths in middle and high school is critical to ending the tobacco epidemic in the United States (1). Studies have shown that 9 out of 10 tobacco smokers first attempted smoking by 18 years of age while greater than 3,200 American youths aged 18 years and below smoked their first cigarette, and 2100 youths and young adults became addicted users (4). However, this has reportedly led American middle and high school youths to become susceptible to one form of tobacco products or the other and are at higher Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Banning Tobacco Essay Tobacco Tobacco has been around for many years, and it should be stopped, but can the economy handle it. The tobacco is reaching young children, and not to mention the nonsmokers as well. The medical effects alone should convince people to stop smoking. Even if the people wanted to quit, it's hard because they are already addicted. If the health doesn't stop people from smoking the cost should because this year the tax on tobacco has gone up dramatically. So now the cost is weakening our pockets. The only ones that win in the tobacco field are the Tobacco Company, because they make all the money. If profits fall, all they have to do is advertise a little harder and profits will roll...show more content... "Environmental tobacco smoke–the secondhand cigarette smoke breathed by nonsmokers is a known carcinogen and the most dangerous environmental pollutant."(Waxman 1995) Surprisingly secondhand smoke causes as many deaths as the tobacco smokers do. "Most people die from secondhand smoke each year than from car accidents."(Waxman 1995) There are a lot of reasons that causes the deaths from secondhand smoke. "Lung cancer is the best known risk from secondhand smoke."(Wilson 1997) The simple smoke from a cigarette is more complex then it really looks. "Each time a person breaths in smoke about a million particles of very tiny complex materials are breathed in and only 20% of that is breathed out."(Hyde 1990) From these little millions of particles is the reason it causes problems for the human body. The main material in the some is nicotine. "Nicotine is an alkaloid poison found in Tobacco leaves that defends the plant against insect attacks. Nicotine affects the nervous system."(Mccuen 1997) Nobody wants that in his or her bodies. But people still light up every day knowing well enough that the tobacco smoke will kill them eventually or cause permanent damage to their bodies. The reason is because the nicotine in the cigarettes is very addictive, let me tell you from my personal experience that it is very addictive. As time goes by a person tolerance goes up. "Tolerance of nicotine begins with the first does of nicotine, people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Tobacco Research Paper Tobacco's origin is very deep that "tobacco is a plant that grows natively in North and South America. It is in the same family as the potato, pepper and the poisonous nightshade, a very deadly plant" (University of Dayton). When Christopher Columbus came to this new world in 1492, he was offered some sort of tobacco leaves by the American Indians that he did not know about this plant (University of Dayton). After this invention, sailors and traders brought it to Europe, and they planted it all over the European soils. It grew in the European soils like cats and dogs. At that time, tobacco became famous because it was thought that it "could cure almost anything, from bad breath to cancer" (University of Dayton). Moreover, "in 1571, a Spanish...show more content... In the history of tobacco, it financially helped the American Revolutionary War in 1776 "by serving as collateral for loans the Americans borrowed from France" (University of Dayton). People smoke like chimneys, and moreover, today, people think that cigarettes just look like friends of smokers, although tobacco and its products are very dangerous to human health. In the history of tobacco, people loved it, smoked it, and offered it to other people, especially their friends and relatives. For example, sales of cigarettes were very high during the WW II because "tobacco companies sent millions of cigarettes to the soldiers for free, and when these soldiers came home, the companies had a steady stream of loyal customers" (University of Dayton). But, later, scientists and doctors found out that it was very bad to human health, for example, "in 1953, Dr. Ernst L. Wynders finds that putting cigarette tar on the backs of mice causes tumors" (University of Dayton). During the history of tobacco, it has been developed as products, such as filtered cigarettes, flavored cigarettes, and electronic cigarettes. Overall, it is very dangerous and unhealthy to human beings, although tobacco was offered by American Indians, brought back to Europe, and planted all over the European soils to get benefits of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Speech on Tobacco Use Essay Speech on Tobacco Use Fellow Students, We all know that tobacco kills. In this speech, I want to tell everyone that tobacco kills non–smokers as well. Let us be clear about it. Second–hand smoke also kills. It is well documented through solid science that exposure to second–hand smoke causes cancer and contributes to various lung and heart diseases. It can cause asthma and other...show more content... Reality however, is different. We are all exposed to second–hand smoke nearly everywhere we go; in cafes, in airports, in shopping centres, often in the workplace. In countries where there are no controls on smoking, people are exposed to it all day, every day. So are people who work in restaurants or bars. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 700 million, or almost half, of the world's children are exposed to second–hand smoke. In spite of what science tells us, however, in many places it is considered so acceptable to smoke, and so rude and unaccommodating to protest, that we dare not speak out against second–hand smoke. The time has come for us to speak out. We have a right to breathe clean air. We have a right to good health and to protect our friends and family. We need to clear the air of second–hand smoke. Today, we are calling for a ban on smoking in public places. Such a ban offers a comprehensive solution to keeping the air clean and safe for all people, both smokers and non–smokers. It puts the emphasis on people's right to health and helps to make smoking the exception rather than the norm. From Canada to Thailand, Australia to South Africaand Ireland, wherever smoking bans have been put into effect they have also been shown to help people quit smoking. The wider the bans on smoking in public places are, the

It was particularly popular during cultural and religious ceremonies, however as the years have passed it has more commonly used now as an addictive over the counter drug providing smokers with a quick fix. • 9. Tobacco And Its Impact On Tobacco As the second largest cause of death in the world, Tobacco has put itself at the top of social problems. Looking though out history, tobacco was widely accepted in American society as well as all around the world. There were three major changes in society that aided in the transformation of tobacco from a social norm into a major social issue. The major changes of technology enhancement of cigarette production, society's views on tobacco intake, and the improvements of scientific knowledge on health issues tobacco causes have all led to the social problem tobacco has formed. Tobacco is native to both North and South American continents and is considered one of the most important cash crops in the United States. European explorers from the fifteenth and sixteenth century discovered tobacco through the Native Americans who used the resource as medicine and as a hallucinogen. The plant was brought back to Europe where it instantly became a drug of choice. Rulers quickly banned tobacco, but its economic benefits and vast popularity compelled acceptance. It spread throughout the flourishing world and became the foundation for the growth of the American economy. Colonist started to grow and sell their own product; it became so important that tobacco was a legal currency in Maryland and Virginia. Because tobacco became a high paying farm crop, the rapid growth of production led to an increase of slave trade. Slaves became the backbone of the tobacco economy. People who are addicted to smoking tobacco are teenagers, young adults, and older adults. The number of people addicted to smoking tobacco has increased highly over the last 5 years. Social problems and media are major reasons for this increase. Smokers are every where with their foggy sphere of cigarette smoke. The other percentage, 28 percent, had almost no info and organizations to warn them about the dangers of tobacco. Though, they have the small percentage. "We're seeing an intense amount of smoking, despite everything the anti–tobacco industry has done," says Cincinnati pediatrician Richard Heyman, chairman of the committee on substance abuse of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ("The Re–hooked Generation" OnHealth: 04) So, what causes this generation to smoke heavily despite all the money spent and effort put in to warn them from the dangers? One factor that helped the increase of smokers is business owners. Recently some places where turned into Non Smoking zones by law, such as, restaurants, bars, and many other public areas. This didn't help decrease the number of smokers, because restaurants along with the other places took a step by designated areas for smokers. This step, which was intended to save business owners from losing their cigarette–smoking customers, made the number of smokers steady. Another factor is the media. Almost every movie ever produced has a hero who lights up a cigarette during an action scene or a tense emotional scene. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. Teen Smoking Essay One of the largest issues today is adolescent smoking. According to a heath based website, nearly 90% of adult smokers start while they are still teens and they never intend to get hooked. They may start by bumming a cigarette or two from a friend at a party, and then go on to buying an occasional pack. Soon they realize that they can't go without that pack. They've gotten used to reaching for a cigarette first thing in the morning, after meals, or during any stressful time. They become addicted, both physically and psychologically. According to the American Lung Association, each day 6,000 children under the age of 18 smoke their first cigarette. Almost 2,000 of them will become regular smokers – that's 757, 000 new smokers annually! ...show more content... These teens may think that smoking shows that they are old enough to make their own decisions. To make matters worse, the tobacco companies are making millions from teen smokers. Tobacco companies use advertising to manipulate both teens and adults. They present images that are hard to shake, even when you know the truth. Have you ever seen a cigarette ad where people are wrinkled, middle–aged or coughing and in the hospital dying of lung cancer? Of course not! In most ads, smokers are shown the way that teens would like to be: attractive and hip, sophisticated and elegant, or rebellious. A 2002 study performed by the Research Triangle Institute states that the tobacco companies make 1.8 billion dollars annually from underage sales. It is interesting that they are making such large profits when it is illegal for a person under the age of 18 to purchase cigarettes. A recent survey by the The American Lung Association indicated that among students under 18 years old who were current smokers, 69.4% reported never being asked for proof of age when buying cigarettes in a store, and 62.4% were not refused purchase because of their age. The tobacco industry kills more people in North America from Monday to Thursday of each week than the terrorists murdered in total on September 11, 2001. That sounds unrealistic, doesn't it? Well, smoking is an epidemic that affects us all, whether you are a smoker or you aren't. In order to stop this epidemic, we need to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The word 'addiction' is a very powerful word in this sense, as it means the physical and psychological craving for a substance that develops into a dependency, and continues even though it is causing the addicted person physical, psychological and social harm. The disease of addiction is chronic and progressive; it can lead to extremely dangerous outcomes. The body develops horrific reactions to the daily onslaught of smoking. It damages the blood vessels in the legs and arms for example, which lead to restricted circulation and even amputation of the limbs. Also, a smoker addict will eventually start getting eye irritations (which leads to blindness), foul smelling hair, hair loss and even start developing a loss of smell. All of these reactions are due to the dangerous chemicals cigarettes contain. One example of such a chemical is hydrogen cyanide, which can lead to headaches, nausea, dizziness and vomiting. Whilst breaking the physical addiction to nicotine is hard, for many smokers breaking the habit – the psychological addiction – is much harder. This is mainly because smoking is likely to have become deeply ingrained over many years, and has therefore become an integral part of many emotional occasions. Sad or unhappy, bored or having to concentrate hard, happy and relaxed with friends – cigarettes are likely to have played a part in almost all of these situations. Some people smoke because of the way cigarettes are advertised, and where they are shown. Another reason why Get more content on HelpWriting.net

My final thesis statement for the this specific final project is now "Smoking can lead to various diseases although a nicotine patch, nasal spray, and vaporizers are the best tools to help quit smoking." My plan was to go in depth in my research and find valuable information relating to my topic. In the beginning, I was extremely confident in my abilities to learn which tools will help the best to quit smoking and had no doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be able to get it all figured out. Essay on Tobacco Tobacco Tobacco is the common name of the plant Nicotiana tabacum and to a limited extent Nicotiana rustica and the cured leaf that is used, usually after aging and processing in various ways for smoking, chewing, snuffing and the extraction of nicotine, the principal alkaloid of tobacco.(4) The species N. tabacum has never been found to grow in the wild.(1) The use of the word tobacco is generally accepted as referring to the products of the tabacum species and so it will be in what follows. Tobacco holds an unparalleled position among crop plants in the world such as: 1) It is one of the very few crops entering world trade entirely on a leaf basis. 2) It is the most widely grown commercial non–food plant in the world. 3) It...show more content... N. tabacum has a uniquely high proportion of alkaloids occurring as nicotine and is considered to have survived as a species by man's protection. Creation of new species through hybridization is a natural botanical occurrence. It is an accepted assumption that N. tabacum arose as a natural hybrid. N. sylvestris contributes one genome, but agreement on the other contributor is not agreed upon. Artificial creation of hybrids which results in 'synthetic tobacco' bear very close genetic similarity to N. tabacum. Cultivated tobaccos have changed immensely over time and it is unlikely that the forms of other species now available bear to close a resemblance to what existed in the distant past.(1) Botany Tobacco is normally grown as an annual and is potentially a woody, shrub like perennial. The tobacco plant has a very shallow root system which provides poor anchorage for the more extensive above ground development. The N. tabacum types are one of the smaller species of tobacco varieties. The leaves supply the most important economic value of the plant and are given the most attention by botanists. Although there is variation in leaf size and shape there is general uniformity of distribution, size and shape within cultivated types. Between types, size and shape may vary considerably but not in distribution. The characters which may include leaf shape

Some would find that the label 'killing business' is very appropriate. Others would say that that name is misleading and inaccurate. Biased, I am not. So we will look at the issue in regards to the industry from both consumer and producer points of perspective with fairness and equality in reach. With an open mind now, let's peer closer at the aftermath tobacco has left us standing in. Something has to get a non–tobacco user to try his/her first cigarette, cigar, chew, or whatever it may be. What is that something? Tobacco ads play an important part in getting people hooked. The government has taken a step in the...show more content... But lowering the tar also meant lowering the nicotine because this method affected both aspects. So the industry generated a new breed of tobacco plants. The nicotine levels of the new flue–cured, Y–1, and rustica tobacco plants were 6% of the plant's body weight. Before, tobacco only had 2%–3.5% nicotine. Chewing tobacco and snuff products have always contained fiberglass in them. These flecks of glass pierced gums and lips to allow nicotine to flow into the pores making it more addictive. The industry has since made the fiberglass obsolete and replaced it with actual nicotine crystals. These crystals penetrate the gums and dissolve inside of your jaw. Basically, consumers are now getting approximately double the nicotine in smoking and smokeless tobacco than had previously. The government has passed laws that prevent youth from purchasing tobacco goods. The legal age for acquirement of tobacco is 18. Does that in itself ward away potential teen tobacco users? To a certain degree, it works very effectively. Consumers under the legal age have no way around this law. However, there are some marketers that sell to underage tobacco users. But the industry is hardly to blame for that. The President devised a plan to raise prices of tobacco over the next four years in an attempt to discourage tobacco consumers. Realistically, no proposition such as that could ever be more ignorant and bemused. This scheme only gives rise to the industry. More profit for the tobacco unit Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Nicotine Essay Nicotine Cigarette smoking has been known for years to impair health of smokers and nonsmokers exposed to smoke in various ways such as by damaging the lungs and circulatory system. Nicotine, present in mainstream and sidestream smoke, is believed to be one of the most toxic components of tobacco. In 1994, David Kessler, commissioner of the FDA, launched an attack on tobacco companies, claiming they deliberately increased nicotine levels in cigarettes. Nicotine has been shown in various experiments to induce tolerance in smokers by its effects on the CNS and dopaminergic receptors. More than 300 nitrosamines have been shown to be carcinogenic in one or more of 40 animal species. (F3) It has been shown that a smoker has a greater chance of endogenously forming nitrosamines than a nonsmoker. (F4) ADDICTIVE EFFECTS OF NICOTINE AND TOLERANCE TO NICOTINE There is much experimental evidence that nicotine is an addictive drug and that it causes a level of tolerance in lab animals and humans, through its effect on the CNS. For a drug to produce dependence, it must rapidly enter in to the blood steam, must be psychoactive, must readily cross the blood brain barrier and the psychosomatic effects must be related to levels of drug in the brain. All of the above is true for nicotine. Tolerance is when, after repeated doses, a given dose of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
