Gender differences have often been argued to be a result of either natural, biological differences or due to socialized differences. Although there are
strong arguments for and against both sides, they each have their merits for viewing gender differentiation. The way in which biology or socialization
affects an individual's gender can be analyzed through sociological study. Kimmel and Holler examine both sides of this argument to analyze how
individuals become gendered by different biological and social factors. First, biological determinism and differential socialization both have their
own explanations for how men and women are different. For example, regarding biological determinism, the textbook states, "...many researchers
believe that the differences in male and female anatomy provide the basis for observable differences between men and women" (Kimmy and Holler
2011). Biological determinists believe the genes inherent in men and women are the sole, specific reason as to why there is gender differentiation.
However, this explanation leaves no room for the social aspect of individuals and does not account for differences of men from one another and
women from each other as well. Next, regarding differential socialization, the textbook states, "We are not necessarily born different: We become

An outrageous example being that the female is to stay at home with the kids and the male is to go off to work and support the family. Let me say this;
I would love to stay home and have my wife go off to work, not that it is easy but I just don't like work. These traits that people portray have been a
cause of culture bearing down on society for a long time influencing people to become masculine or feminine. Though this is a tough statement to
defend because it has been happening for so long that it seems normal. It seems as though there is a direct relationship between the male being
masculine and the female being feminine, but is there?
After the reading and thinking in depth about this subject I now question the actual relationship of the masculine male and the feminine female. To
put an answer to my stated question I would say that in today's society the two are directly related. Society has forced males to be the masculine
guys that work on cars drink beers and watch football. And in just the opposite case the women have been molded to think that they are supposed to
cook dinner and clean the house. More frequently however, I have seen somewhat of an evening out in the role of the standard male and female. As

compared to the effect of culture and socialization. In her research, Tannen asserts that the basic uses of conversation by women are to establish and
support intimacy; while for men it is to acquire status. These styles and motives for communicating represent different cultural upbringings, and one is
not necessarily better than the other. However, she also notes in her findings that men tend to interrupt more and ask questions less. In fact, thefemale
tendency to ask more questions sometimes results in receiving lower grades from male professors who view frequent questioning as proof that a

There are differences between sex and gender. Gender refers to characteristics of men and women that are socially constructed. Such social construct
could be norms, roles and relationships between groups of women and men. This varies from society to society and it can be changed. People are

inequality by making those differences appear not to be socially produced but naturally produced (pg 318). Thus, gendered institutions are something
that have become embedded in our everyday life and they are perpetuated by our own doing. Meaning, as a society we cannot differentiate what is
institutionally based thought, or thought processes that are based off of behavior that we know to be right or wrong.
The real question is, if Kimmel, and other social scientists such as himself, have pointed out that it is these gendered institutions that are proliferating
gender inequality in our society, then why has the American society, which claims to be one of equality, failed to see the predominate culprit of the

Society has clearly defined boundaries between what is considered to be male or female. The development of an individual's gender role is formed by
interactions with those in close proximity. Society constantly tells us how we should look, act and live based on gender. Family, friends and the media
have a tremendous impact on how these roles are formed and the expected behavior of each gender role.
Gender, as defined by the United Nations, includes the psychological, social, cultural, and behavioral characteristics associated with being female or
male. It further defines acceptable and allowable behavior in for both men and women in a broad cultural sense (United Nations, 2016). Gender
identity impacts our development and how we interact with society. Our daily life decisions are impacted by our gender role beliefs.
Gender ideologies determine the roles that men and women should adhere to in society and are influenced by an individual's social beliefs and
experiences. From traditional to egalitarian values, prejudicial and discriminator behavior towards women can be explained as either interest based or
exposure based (Bolzendahl & Myers 2004). The interest based theory is dependent on whether or not an individual's personal goals are negatively
impacted by gender inequality. If so, they are then more likely to embrace an egalitarianism way of thinking.

Females are better at verbalizing and verbal tasks and use double the amount of words than males when talking. Females also learn how to read and
write earlier than males and also have a superior sensory system. Females use their five senses much better and are able to remember sensory
information easier and have better hearing ranges than males (Sasser). It may often seem that males do not pay attention in the classroom, but in
reality it may not be a case of attention at all. Males actually might not hear the frequency or pitch of the teacher's voice, so in turn a teacher needs to
