- 24. Apprenticeship levy £15,000 allowance is not a cash payment Only 1.3% of employers will pay the levy 6 April 2017, at a rate of 0.5% of pay bill, paid through PAYE Applies to all UK employers in all sectors 2.3% of public sector workforce will need to be apprentices

Paying the levy • Employers pay their levy to HMRC, through the PAYE process • Single employers with multiple PAYE schemes will only have one allowance. • Connected employers share one allowance • Employer of 250 employees, each with a gross salary of £20,000. • Pay bill: 250 x £20,000 = £5,000,000 • Levy sum: 0.5% x £5,000,000 = £25,000 • Allowance: £25,000 - £15,000 = £10,000 annual levy payment • Employer of 100 employees, each with a gross salary of £20,000. • Pay bill: 100 x £20,000 = £2,000,000 • Levy sum: 0.5% x £2,000,000 = £10,000 • Allowance: £10,000 - £15,000 = £0 annual levy payment LEVIED EMPLOYER NON-LEVIED EMPLOYER

Schools and Sixth Forms, Bolton College, the Bolton Work-based Learning Provider Network and the University of Bolton
- Worked with Whistl, Aldi, Keoghs, Light Cinema and others to connect our residents to quality employment and training opportunities
- Started this month – but are businesses aware of the opportunities/challenges and support on offer?
- One example of how we support local business is App Levy – supporting local employers to maximise the Levy and recruit local young people…Very short overview… The apprenticeship levy will be charged at a rate of 0.5% of an employer’s payroll where payroll is in excess of £3million Why all the changes? •To get employers to own the funding system. •Find out the key drivers of employer businesses and target growth. •Double the amount of funding for apprenticeships from £1.5 Billion to £3 Billion. •Raise the standards of apprenticeships.
- Employers with a payroll of over £3m will be most obviously affected although changes will affect all businesses – big medium and small represented here today… Not just bigger businesses -Apprenticeship funding for non-Levy payers is also being changed, with the government contributing 90% of the training costs, while employers need only contribute 10%. Taking the government’s co-investment into account, apprenticeship-based training can cost a less than many commercial or private-sector courses. There’s also a range of extra funding available for organisations taking on young adults, or in deprived areas. Eg… Implications for employers with <50 people working for them: Able to train 16 to 18 year old apprentices at no cost. Take on a 19 to 24 year old apprentice who was formerly in care or has a Local Authority Education, Health and Care plan. The government will pay 100% of the apprenticeship training costs for these individuals. AGE grant still applies for those with <250 employees until July, 2017. Partnership including Council, training provider and other working in partnership with Gm (Growth Hub) on hand to provide guidance and support
- Levy c30 affected organisations including schools. There is extensive engagement underway at a national, Gm (growth hub) and local level (Team Bolton) to support you– apprenticeship can be a complex area to navigate – local providers via Partnership and Growth Hub can help Exciting time – new degree apprenticeships due to come online from the University Apprenticeship Group – co-ordinating and shaping provision locally- want businesses to have a leading role in this agenda e.g. Seddon Work with us to train and recruit locally!
- Our Quick Wins workshops are being run in partnership with the local authorities in GM. We already have workshops booked in Manchester, Bury, Trafford, Tameside, Stockport and Bolton. The workshop in Bolton is being held on the 6th of July at Bolton College. Later in the year we will be running the specialist masterclasses to follow up on these Quick Wins workshops.
