  7. 7. What differencecan savings make to your bottom line? If your turnover = £100,000 And 10% of this is profit = £10,000 Your costs currently amount to 25% = £25,000 So, if you reduce your costs by 20% = £5,000 saved Now your profit is £15,000, which is equivalent to a 50% increase in turnover!

Capital spend must stack up… Payback period – This is the length of time that the capital cost of a project is recouped by the saving in expenditure by that project – E.g. total cost £10,000 – Annual saving = £2,000 – Payback = 10,000 / 2,000 = 5 years – This doesn’t account for other savings, such as increased productivity or decreased maintenance And include other considerations e.g. capital equipment cost; delivery; installation; building alterations; staff training; decommissioning; disposal

How to go green – Measuring and Saving Workbook exercise: Writing your own green action plan • Consider the resources your business uses and how these are used • List the biggest uses of resource in your business • Using this list, use the workbook to decide on a few simple actions that you can implement right away to start saving
