Objectives
List 3 key characteristics of sedimentary, igneous or
metamorphic rocks on a worksheet.
Describe in a brief paragraph how each type of rock
(metamorphic, igneous and metamorphic) is formed on a
worksheet.
Identify from a photo, the type of rock - sedimentary, igneous
and metamorphic rocks.

Today’s Lesson
1. PowerPoint presentation
2. Worksheets
3. Group poster making
4. Poster presentations
4. z
Igneous Rocks
How it is formed:
= formed when molten rock (magma/lava) cools to a solid state.
Characteristics:
Primary rocks (formed from magma and begin the rock cycle)
Does not have fossil deposits.
Contains crystals
Can be glassy or course
Can be intrusive or extrusive
Intrusive = form below the earths surface and magma cools slowly resulting in large
crystals.
Extrusive = formed above the earths surface by lava erupting from volcanoes , they cool
quickly resulting in small crystals.
6. z
Metamorphic rocks
How it is formed:
= formed when other rocks are subjected to high heat, high pressure, hot
mineral rich fluids or likely a combination of these factors. This occurs deep
within the earth where tectonic plates meet.
Characteristics:
Contains course crystals
Visible layers/bands
Rarely has fossils
Rarely has pores or openings
8. z
Sedimentary rocks
How it is formed:
= Formed when sediments of older rock (broken down bits of rock) and plant and
animal remains settle on top of each-other, and are then pressed together to from new
rocks.
Characteristics:
Not crystalline
Many layers
Soft
Often contains fossils
Grainy, sandy texture

Worksheets
Complete your worksheets using the PowerPoint, your textbook
and google on your device if needed.
Ask me if you have any questions!
11. z
Group poster making!
Create a colourful poster on igneous, metamorphic or
sedimentary rocks.
Include how the rock is formed, characteristics, examples and a
sketch of a type of the rock.
You have 12 minutes!
Then you will do a quick 2-minute presentation of your poster to
the class.

Any Questions?
Challenge for next lesson: take a photo of a rock you see
outside, bring the photo into class next lesson and try to identify
the rock type!
Thankyou, see you next lesson!
