Weight regain after bariatric
surgery was not correlated with
OSA severity or CPAP Adherence
BACKGROUND
1 in 5 patients undergoing bariatric surgery
regain significant weight after their initial
weight loss. Many of these patients have
obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is
known to cause worsening adrenergic tone,
inflammation, and insulin resistance.
METHODS
1. All patients undergoing bariatric surgery
at University of Utah (Apr 2011 to Jan
2016) required preoperative sleep
disordered breathing evaluation.
2. Retrospective chart review of weight
and CPAP-machine adherence tracking
3. All adult patients undergoing bariatric
surgery and had OSA testing or
treatment at U of U were included
4. Unadjusted comparison of patients who
had any CPAP adherence to those with
none
5. Unadjusted linear regression of
diagnostic AHI and maximum weight
loss and regain
PATIENTS
• N=116 patients met inclusion
criteria
• Preoperative BMI 45.7 ± 8.2
• Preoperative AHI 34.9 ± 31.7 /hour.
• 81 of 116 had any post-op CPAP
usage
• Of patients with usage , average
adherence in available downloads
was 66.8 ±% days with 4 or more
hours of use.
OUTCOMES
• Weights were available up to 36.1 ±
16.5 months after surgery
• Weight nadir occurred 16.8 ± 12.7
months
• N=35 patients with no usage lost 37.8
± 20.2 kg, followed by 6.1 ± 7.7 kg
regain
• N=81 patients with CPAP usage lost
35.97 ± 16.3 kg followed by 8.2 ± 9.0
kg regain. (p=0.19 for difference,
