Outcomes of Revision Laparoscopic Gastric
Banding: A Retrospective Study
Purpose: To present outcomes of revision laparoscopic
gastric banding (LAGB)
Design: Retrospective Study
Sample: 163 patients that received LAGB procedures
between March 1998 and July 2009
Results: LAGB revision surgery is tolerated well by
patients and data shows that revision surgery would not
cause further weight loss and does maintain the weight
loss they had already achieved.

Limitations
• Select groups for study were limited in that it was a specific
medical facility during a specific time range and not
generalized
• Threats to validity regarding original data collection and
unreliability of the authors
Nursing Responsibilities
• Review of literature done using Academic Search Premier,
CINAHL and EBSCO Host and included search terms such as:
“gastric bypass”, “weight loss”, “post-operative”, “outcomes”,
“Roux-en-Y”, “laparoscopic”
• Bring the research to experts
• Provide the best quality patient care possible
• Respect the autonomy of patients
• Apply evidence-based research to practice
Recommendation: Nurses will incorporate evidence based
research into their teaching on laparoscopic bariatric surgery to
better give patients accurate perioperative information.
Outcome: Hospitals will incorporate evidence based training
courses specific to bariatric surgery for nurses in order to better
understand ways to teach their patients accurate information
regarding their surgery.
Recommendation: Nurses will use evidence based research to
standardize follow-up procedures for surgical patients in order to
gauge the success of bariatric surgery.
Outcome: Hospitals will establish a protocol for patients to
follow-up after surgery and maintain a database to track
progress.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass at a Large Academic Medical
Center: Lessons Learned from the First 1000 Cases
Purpose: To find an effective method for long-term patient
follow up to find the source of post-operative weight regain.
Design: Quantitative Study
Sample: 1,096 Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
(LRYGB) patients from January 2003 to December 2007.
Results: Maintaining a patient database that helps to aid in
follow-up monitoring of patients and allows for more aggressive
control following surgery. The inability to maintain a database
and follow-up method is a significant problem for these patients.
