Before the Opportunity Rover went dead, it collected organic material from Mars and returned it
to Earth for analysis. You perform an experiment in which nuclear material (chromatin) is
isolated from what appears to be Martian cells. You briefly digest with micrococcal nuclease
which cuts accessible DNA. Any proteins are then removed and the resulting purified DNA is
analyzed by gel electrophoresis. You observe a collection of DNA fragments (black bars) that
are multiples of 410 base pairs in length (i.e., 410 bp , 820 bp , 1230 bp , 1640 bp . and so forth).
What can you conclude about the organization of DNA and protein in the Martian sample? (Why
410 and why muliples fo 410 ) Suppose you perform an experiment in which the chromatin is
digested for a mugh longer period of time with micrococcal nuclease prior to removal of
chromatin proteins. When the resulting DNA preparation is analyzed by electrophoresis, all of
the DNA appears as fragments 342 bp in length. What does this mean? (Why only 1 band and
why 342 insted of 410 )
