Introduction to Energy Savings
Global energy consumption has been an important issue for the last 20 years among governments, political
institutions, social organizations and consumers. The main aspect of such importance was identified by air
pollution, carbon fuels, non-efficient electricity use and as a result, energy waste and environmental issues.
The scope of energy consumers is far-reaching, but the major user of energy in modern society is industry,
accounting for roughly 40% of final energy use. Manufacturing and refining are heavily reliant on coal or oil
as the main energy resource. Gas is being used increasingly to replace coal, because it produces a cleaner
fuel impact on the environment. Electricity is considered an important energy component of industrial
energy and has a significant role in commercial and residential sectors.
Considerable energy savings are available in the construction industry because of the large amount of waste
in construction activities. Manufacturing that operates mineral, oil refining, and chemical manufacturing is a
sector where significant energy savings could be made, especially in big cities. The power generation
industry uses fossil fuels and produces more than 50% of international greenhouse gas emissions. Most
power stations have strong environmental incentives to optimize and lower energy consumption. Power
stations in major cities often cause air pollution as well.
Energy savings is the goal of efforts to reduce the amount of energy required to provide products and
services. For example, insulating a home allows the structure to use less heating and cooling energy to
achieve and maintain a comfortable temperature. Installing fluorescent lights or natural skylights reduces
the amount of energy required to attain the same level of illumination compared to using
traditional incandescent light bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights use two-thirds less energy and may last six
to ten times longer than incandescent lights. Improvements in energy efficiency are most often achieved by
adopting a more efficient technology or production process. 

SunShine Daylighting System
Significant energy savings are achieved using SunShine daylighting units that reduce carbon emissions by
90%. They are ideal for the commercial and industrial sectors. Studies prove a positive impact of daylight in
the interior on employee and student performance.

The Positive Effect on Human Performance
A study of the Retail sector, showed that sky lit stores in a chain of 108, had higher sales ranging between
31% and 49%. The researchers believed that increase was due to:

How the Sunshine Daylighting Unit Works

SunShine units are leading edge High Performance Skylights (HPS), also called deep-well skylights, and are
designed to use sunlight to provide cool, defused light to illuminate building interiors. Major components
include:
 A technologically advanced skylight lens captures more light for use indoors from dusk until dawn and
on cloudy days, regardless of season.
 A highly-reflective light well directs the sunlight into the building and ensures against undesirable gain
or loss of heat.
 A diffusion lens, unique to SunShine, disperses the light evenly throughout the building.
 SunShine I uses direct lighting, and the SunShine II uses direct lighting and LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes)
system.
 An integrated control system using photo sensors adds artificial light (internal or existing external) only
as needed to maintain the desired constant light level.
Tested and Approved
Few truly integrated skylight and electric light systems currently exist on the market, and information about
their efficiency is limited. SunShine Daylighting Systems have been field tested by Lighting Research Center.
Results
 Energy use was 40% less (operating 20 hours a day). The field test showed a significant difference in
daily lighting energy use before and after the SunShine unit installation. SunShine with a photo sensor
lighting control reduced energy consumption by 40% (from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. there was a 100%
energy saving) compared to the previous metal halide lighting.


SunShine units are leading edge High Performance Skylights (HPS), also called deep-well skylights, and are designed to use sunlight to provide cool, defused light to illuminate building interiors.
