Mechanical Engineer with 13 years of design, process and engineering expertise applied to real-
world manufacturing environments. I use a practical, broad knowledge of engineering principles, and
manufacturing processes, to solve the hardest problems and provide the best solutions.
I deliver complete and complex projects under tight deadlines, acquire skills and educate myself as
required, and maintain a high standard of work with minimal guidance. I consider myself to be a
competent and well-regarded senior engineer capable of exercising judgement, managing my own
time and effectively enlisting the help of others to achieve required outcomes.
Taurean Garage Doors – SENIOR PRODUCT/PROCESS ENGINEER 2011-Present
Taurean is a part of Stramit Building Products, one of the largest suppliers roll-formed steel building
products in Australia.
Product Development and Process Improvement: Responsible for development of products and
manufacturing processes critical to growth of company . I report to the Operations Manager.
Commercial Roller Door (2nd
hand production line)
◦ Designed new components, calculated spring combinations, and developed a complete
Bill Of Materials. This assignment included all Project Scope Planning, CAD, drawing
management, component testing, FEA analysis, and supplier consultations.
◦ Designed tooling for main press – a $40k 6.2m long tool. Tool negotiation, design and
validation, commissioning. The panel I invented is widely agreed to be the flattest,
strongest, and most cost-effective on the market.
◦ Design tasks required knowledge of multiple disciplines (eg roll-forming, injection
moulding, surface coating, press-tooling, aluminium extrusion) – designed for
manufacture, cost minimisation and functional performance.
◦ Oversaw toolmaker, contractor and fitter activities related to installation and
commissioning of plant.
◦ Risk assessment of plant and hazard management plan.
Kit-box upgrade
◦ Worked with Supply Chain Officer to develop the overseas supply of accessory boxes.
This involved full component specification, off-tool-sample inspection and revision
management, final testing and engineering approval of approximately 50 components.
◦ The goal of the project was to improve product quality but the project saved $350k/yr.
Wind testing to Australian Standards.
◦ Designed two wind-rated roller door systems, achieving AS/NZS4505:2012 compliance
via a full scale interstate testing regime. The modular design I proposed and implemented
introduced a $200k/yr cost-down, reduced installation time and removed a hazardous
welding operation.
◦ Co-ordinated with Stramit Sydney R&D business unit to conduct tests on entire roller door
range to comply with Standards for cyclonic regions of Australia.
◦ Designed 4-hole pneumatic hand-held hole-punch for attaching wind-clips to door-
curtains and had tools made and commissioned.
Guide Track with Safety Edge
◦ Listed as co-inventor on patented guide track with safety edge. Worked with external roll-
former company to introduce new automated production line.
Replacement Sectional Door Line (2015)
◦ Oversaw safe decommissioning and cleanout of obsolete shutter production line, and
delivery of new production line.
◦ New component design and sourcing, BOM and spring chart development.
◦ Oversight of installation, commissioning and testing product to Australian requirements.
2nd
hand Sectional Door Line (2012)
2. ◦ Design (CAD and drawings) of some components, both plastic and steel. Sourcing of off-
the-shelf parts from Chinese suppliers.
◦ Testing and approval of components. Australian Standards compliance.
◦ Factory layout and manufacturing flow.
◦ All technical information and instructions
◦ Detailed optimised calculation of all spring requirements. Reduced yearly cost of holding
by $20k.
◦ Project had $50k budget and increased company revenue by 15%
Non-project Engineering Duties:
◦ As a part of Fletcher Building, Taurean has a heavy focus on industrial health and safety.
Safety observations, risk assessments, JSA's, Hazardous Work Permits, Incident
Investigation, safety upgrades, inductions etc.
◦ I co-ordinate on-site contractors for plant and factory upgrades. Eg I have overseen the
installation of high-voltage cabling the length of the factory ceiling, which involved working
at heights and crane isolation in a production area.
◦ I direct and monitor maintenance fitters and report on their activities and progress to
senior management.
◦ I provide engineering support to frontline customer service on technical or product-related
issues, and also support ongoing factory and process improvements.
◦ Working with local toolmakers for fabrication of custom spare parts (guillotine blades,
replacement rollers, punch maintenance etc).
◦ Project Management assistance and support to colleagues as required.
◦ Assessment of production and process quality problems and inefficiencies on an ongoing
basis, with normal manufacturing experience (work flow, Lean Principles, plant layout,
operator utilisation, work-station design), analysis of competing hypotheses and root-
cause analysis skills required.
◦ Have a current First Aid certificate and am on the company Safety Committee.
AWMA Water Management – DESIGNER 2009-2011
AWMA is an ISO9001 manufacturing facility in Northern Victoria; designing, fabricating and installing
aluminium and stainless steel water control gates.
Drafting: Produced all the detailed drawings for AWMA's largest contract – a 2 year program to
install water gates across northern QLD for Sunwater.
Developed large and detailed CAD models, using design tables and equations, to reduce the
drawing turnaround time from 8 hours to 2 hours per site.
Working with drafters to improve drafting system and mentor them on ways to improve their
efficiency. Included writing and customising Visual Basic macros.
Product Development: Redesigned the company's largest selling line of gates
Reduced labour time by 25% and materials by 20%.
Managed project through scoping, FMEA, budgeting, and prototyping through to production
drawings and work instructions.
Use of CosmosWorks FEA simulation software
Fallshaw Wheels and Castors – SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER 2007 - 2009
Fallshaw Wheels & Castors designs and manufactures injection moulded and pressed metal
products. They are certified to ISO9001.
New product design and development
CAD design, eg.
6 year’s SolidWorks experience – All stages of Product Development life-cycle: initial
product development, design tables, prototyping, design validation, BOMs, drawings
Designed and patented revolutionary patented plastic castor – 42 components, 16
tools, $250k investment with 30% ROI
3. Designed full range of 400kg heavy duty castors– 19 tool program, $120k investment
25% ROI
This was a senior role working on the company's largest projects in which I was expected to
plan and act independently under management guidance, use my own judgement and take
responsibility.
Sourced tooling locally and overseas (China). Including CAPEX, tool design approval, ISIR,
functional testing, detailed drawings.
Project Planning
Specification / Scope of work: Developing project specifications based on customer
requirements and target costing. Leading cross-functional discussions to establish
assumptions / risks / impact of project.
CAD design and development:
Costing: Detailed financial CAPEX financial justification of project based on known costs.
Prototyping: DVP&R and DMFEA, validating the product design concept before committing to
tooling costs.
Toolmaking: Liaising with either internal, external or even international toolmakers for tool
quoting, designing, approving, sample inspection and tool sign-off
Commissioning: Releasing the product to production with full work instructions, BOM’s, and
detailed engineering drawings.
