2. Samuel L. Clemens was born on
November 30, 1835, in Missouri.
He wrote under the pen name
Mark Twain and was also a
riverboat pilot, journalist,
lecturer, entrepreneur and
inventor.
Twain died on April 21, 1910, in
Redding, Connecticut.

Even though some of his letters and
accounts of traveling had been published,
Twain actually launched his literary
career with the short story "The
Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras
County," published in 1865.

It is a travel book which humorously
chronicles what Twain called his "Great

It is about political corruption in post-
Civil War America in the era referred
to the Gilded Age. Although not one of
Twain's best-known works.

It is a novel about a young boy growing up
along the Mississippi River. It is set in the
fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by
Hannibal Missouri, where Twain lived.

Finn

It was the first in major American
literature to be written throughout in
Vernacular English. It is told in the first
person by Huckleberry Finn. The book is
noted for its colorful description of people
and places along the Mississippi River.
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an
often scathing satire on entrenched
attitudes, particularly racism.
