The Portuguese educational system has national exams in key subjects at various grade levels. Students with special needs receive specialized teaching with individualized curricula, teachers, resources, and support. Education is compulsory and free, with financial support available for students in need. The school calendar has 180 days divided into 3 terms, with breaks at Christmas, Easter, and summer holidays. Student assessment varies between primary and secondary school, using qualitative ratings or quantitative grades. Assessment criteria examine both knowledge and attitudes, with different weightings and tools used to evaluate skills like reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
