10. Any leakage particularly in process equipment of a continuous plant may result in loss of life
and extensive damage to property besides affecting the economy. Hence joints where the
leakage of fluids can occur easily are required to be absolutely leak tight. But in case of
flanged joints, controlling the leakage of fluid without a sealing element between the mating
components is very difficult as it is not possible to machine the faces of the mating
components required to be perfectly flat and parallel. Moreover, they can not provide the
degree of interface contact essential for leak prevention of fluid even with very accurate
mechanical surfaces. Also, minute irregularities on these machined surfaces permit the
escape of the fluid under pressure. Hence to achieve a leak proof
flanged joints; a sealing element in the form of a Gasket should be introduced in between the
two mating components. The Gasket should be introduced in between the two mating
components.
