Ais for Automaticity
Automaticity is
the act of being
able to quickly
and accurately
read a word
without pausing
Bis for Brainstorming
Brainstorming,
or prewriting, is
the first stage
of the writing
process involving
gathering ideas
on a topic.
Cis for Choral Reading
Choral reading is
the act of reading
aloud in unison
with a whole class
or group of
students. Choral
reading helps build
students' fluency,
self-confidence,
and motivation.
Drafting is the
second stage of
the writing
process where
student begin
putting their
ideas on paper in
some kind of
order.
Dis for Drafting
Editing is the
fourth stage of the
writing process
that involves
making corrections
to the grammar,
mechanics and
spelling.
E is for Editing
Fluency is the
ability to read
accurately, quickly
and with
expression. To
read “like you
speak”.
Fis for Fluency
Grapheme is an
individual
letter that
represents a
sound or a
phoneme.
Gis for Grapheme
High frequency
words are the
words that appear
most often in
texts.
His for High Frequency Words
Inflectional morpheme is
a suffix that is added to
the end of a word that
gives the word a
grammatical property.
doesn't change the
meaning of the word. It is
a suffix that is added to
the end of a word to
assign a particular
grammatical property to
that word.
Iis for Inflectional Morpheme
Journal writing is
used for various
forms of writing
exercises including
personal, dialogue,
reflective and
learning journals. It is
the process of
recording personal
insights, reflections
and questions on
assigned or personal
topics.
Jis for Journal Writing
KWL Chart -
Stands for "What I
KNOW, what I WANT
to know, and what I
LEARNED. It is is a
type of graphic
organizer to assist
students in monitoring
their reading
comprehension
K is for KWL Chart
Literary Elements
are the setting,
character, plot,
style, point of
view, tone or
theme of a story.
Lis for
Literary Elements
Morpheme is the
smallest unit of
language that has
meaning.
M is for Morpheme
Nonsense words are
often used to
determine if students
have mastered the
alphabetic principle.
These are made-up
words that students
could not have
memorized, but must
apply the alphabetic
principle to.
N is for Nonsense Words
Orthography is the
study of spelling
and standard
spelling patterns
O is for
Orthography
Publishing is the
fifth stage of
the writing
process. It
involves getting
the paper ready
to share with the
teacher or class.
P is for Publishing
Questioning
strategies are
often used by
teachers to test a
student’s
understanding of a
topic.
Q is for Questioning Strategies
Revising is the
third stage of the
writing process. It
involves polishing
or changing ideas
or concepts in the
text.
R is for
Revising
Segmentation is
the ability to
break a word into
separate
phonemes or
sounds.
S is for Segmentation
Transitional
Readers are
students who have
the ability to read
with relative
fluency and
comprehension.
T is for Transitional Readers
Using context
clues is the use of
information
surrounding an
unknown word or
group of words to
aid in identifying
the unknown word.
U is for
Context Clues
A Venn Diagram is
a type of graphic
organizer that
consists of two
overlapping circles.
It is used to aid in
comparing and
contrasting things
that have some
common elements.
V is for Venn Diagram
A word sort is
small group activity
where students
identify the
meaning and
properties of each
word and then
"sort" the list into
collections of words
with similar
features.
W is for Word Sort
Syntax involves
the ways in which
words are
organized
X is for
Syntax
Syllabication is
the ability to
separate words
into syllables.
Y is for Venn Syllabication
A graphic
organizer is a
tool that helps
students
organize,
connect and
recall
information.
Z is for Graphic Organizer
