I agonized over writing this speech for a long time, because I felt like nothing I could say would make a difference, first because I don't know if
what I could say would be good advice, and second because I don't know if advice about things like being true to yourself and setting goals and all

And I got more and more anxious as deadlines approached, and on the last night I could, I sat in front of my computer at 11:09, only wanting to go
to sleep, trying to come up with my speech, feeling completely futile because it is a waste of time for me to get up and say anything if it is not
important. It's boring for you and it's just dumb for me, so I was sitting here crying, because even though I had nothing to say I felt like I needed to
say something because I am valedictorian and I should speak.
And then I decided that maybe I just shouldn't talk. I should be the valedictorian who doesn't speak. I mean, what's the point of speaking when there is
no point? And then my tears slowed, and I thought, I could never respect myself for that. That is letting the fear and futility get the best of me. Because
if I can't make some statement in my life, then my whole life is meaningless and there is truly no point in being here.
Even though I don't know what the point is, on some level I believe there is a point to existence, otherwise we wouldn't exist, and so even when
everything seems futile and stupid, maybe the best we can do is to have the courage to make a statement. To not back down and let the questions and

I won't speak long today for two reasons. The first being that I remember my high school graduation and I couldn't tell you who spoke or how many
speakers there even were; all I remember is the that person in front of me had one of the old Gameboys and was playing Tetris. Everyone was so

As a graduation speaker, I'm supposed to stand up here reflectively gazing out upon the few, the proud, the chosen: the Class of 2012, and point in
general directions while saying the clichГ©, "Among us I see the first female president and a future congressman and the next mayor of Everett." But

competitive, be compassionate. Then, win or lose, we will have gleaned something from every experience. We all know this and practice it already. In
the book "The Chosen," David Malter says, "The greatest things that will ever happen in your life will often be the result of silly things, as you call
them – ordinary things is a better expression." A lot of silly things happen in high school, everything from Personal Floatation Device Day to the

fear that we might lose what we already have. We become content in doing the same thing over and over again. We try to justify our reasons for not
doing anything by telling ourselves that someone else will do it or by questioning our ability. What could I do? I couldn't make a difference. How
selfish it is for someone who has been blessed with the talent and capabilities to just sit there and do nothing. Just think where our country would be if
Martin Luther King Jr. had told himself that he could not make a difference. The seating arrangements in this stadium tonight might be very different.

If I was asked to describe the attitude of the common high school student with one word, I would choose the word "why." We seem to be constantly
questioning everything that appears out of the ordinary, anything that departs from the routine which has been established for us. We seem to be
intolerant of anything that our MTV culture has declared "uncool." As we graduate from WashingtonHigh School, we must stop asking "why" and start
asking "why not." We should be open to anything as we venture into what society has labeled "the real world." No longer should we limit ourselves to

Throughout high school, the majority of us have kept the same limited group of friends. We assumed that our immediate company was best suited

We are knocking on the door of total independence, something we have never fully understood. We have just barely begun the trip on the roller coaster

She had no idea she was molding a geographer. I can remember learning about Thanksgiving by making a Turkey dinner out of play dough for my
GI Joe figures and learning how to read by wearing the pages of my Bernstein Bears books. . My mom even created a core class when she
introduced my brother and I to gerbils. It started out as a sexual reproduction chapter but after about a month it became a math class just trying to keep
up with how many new gerbils were in the cage.
When it came time to go into public school, I tested into the third grade but was given the option to go into second to be with my age group. I can

We need to do something, and that is to vote. As Lincoln said, "The ballot is stronger than the bullet."

back regarding the block schedule changes. It may have seemed an insignificant, almost frivolous thing, but the point was to be heard; to make a
statement – that we can be heard and do have a say. And we were, at least in part, successful. I urge you to do the same. Only now, in the "real world."
Write a petition, sign a petition, vote, talk to your legislators; write a letter to the newspaper. There are countless ways.
Now that we are in "the real world," and want to be a part of it, what do we do? We have the responsibility to carefully examine it and become aware

Students, faculty, family, friends, on this exciting day, I speak to optimism, laughter, and grins.
As I was gathering input for this graduation speech, several people suggested including a profound quote offering "encouraging advice to the young
graduates", and then there were others who said, "eh don't worry about it, no one listens to those anyway." Fortunately, I was actually able to take from
both suggestions and found a happy balance.
You see, I won't tell you today to: "Dare to dream" or "Find your own vision" or even to "Strive for excellence," or any trite clichГ© that's ever been
said in a graduation speech. So this might not be your typical commencement. I have no list of "Do's and Don'ts" for you. I don't have any funny...show

And we've all heard our parents say "we trust you" followed by a "be home by 12 o clock".
Life is one big contradiction and you'll drive yourself crazy if you try to figure it out. So don't. Embrace it. Laugh at it a bit. Whatever you do, don't
take it too seriously. Those are some of the ways I have made it through these past four years at McNeil.
You see, the biggest contradiction I have noticed so far is the stress that is put on the big things in life when it is really all the little things scattered in
between when I find I'm most happy. It's those seemingly insignificant, random pieces of time that have kept me going throughout the crazies thrown at
us as and they keep me laughing, smiling, and moving on. Whether it's playing Halo and focusing on getting that next running riot, chatting and
profile–snooping on AIM, or hearing a pointless story told from a friend––it's those little moments of carefree smiling that I feel get overlooked.
With AP classes, national honor this, mu alpha that, drum practice here, yearbook deadline there, flag twirling up, singing voices coming down, and
bells ring ringing all in between, it's no wonder we students have been rushing through the motions of our ritualistic high school lives. By the time we
make it home, create time for dinner, toss a wave to the parents, and start our homework, the days begin to blur into nights and before you know it

Parents, friends, staff, and fellow graduates,
I like that word, graduates. In fact, I like that word so much, that I decided to look it up in the dictionary for the heck of it. And beyond the obvious
definitions I found, there was one that plainly stuck out. "To change gradually". Now if you think about it, I guess that sums up all our years of
schooling right there. I mean, I can still remember back to first grade and racing home to watch the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesdefeat Shredder and

When your boyfriend or girlfriend just said it's all over, your friends were there for you. When you waited until the very last moment to finish that
project and needed help, your friends were there for you. And whenever you needed someone to talk with or a shoulder to cry on, your friends were
always there for you. Out of all the lessons we have been taught, none are greater then the lessons we have received from our friends. Before you go
today, don't let the opportunity to say one final goodbye to your fellow companions slip by. For they are the true gifts ofhigh school that we will never
forget and hold in our hearts for the rest of our lives.
So now it's time to complete another phase of our "gradual change" by taking a final step away from home and into the real world. But the
question is, how will we do this. Will we charge through any barriers we encounter in a relentless pursuit of our dream, or will we aimlessly walk
the road of life and turn around whenever struggles come our way. It's easy for us to think of a dream, but something else to touch it. Many have
gone after their goals passively and failed to ever reach the peak of the mountain they so tirelessly climbed. However, others have dedicated
themselves to their dream and fought like a raging bull to see it become a reality. My challenge for us today, is to be that raging bull and climb to the

so ugly? The anxiety will not die. Capture the anxiety in your mind as a visual aspect of tonight. Remember it.
Let the twitch in your ear awake your emotions. Listen carefully. It's the sound of a gloomy day. What is usually a dismal tune is now replaced with
the bittersweet melody of our graduation ceremony under the clouds. Ask yourself, when was the last time you realized the song, instead of the sight of
a day? Capture the drizzle as an audio aspect of tonight. Remember it.
