Bertus Steenkamp – Consultant and Business Owner
He started his Working Career as an Anglo Coal Student in 1986 to 1990 when he
completed his Higher National Diploma in Coal Mining.
Most of his early practical experience was gained at New Largo Colliery.
He later joined Rand Mines in 1990 as Planning Engineer where he occupied various
positions in the Technical, Opencast Mining and Underground Sections of the Mine.
His first appointment as Mine Overseer in 1992, after obtaining his Mine Manager’s
Certificate at age 27, was followed by his appointment as Production Manager at
Delmas Colliery in 1994. During the course of his stay at this mine, he later had the
responsibility for Total Management of the Underground Mine (3 shafts).
He joined Grinaker-LTA during 2000 and up to 2003 he occupied various senior
positions within the Contract Mining – Coal Division at Grinaker-LTA Mining
Contracting before being appointed as Director-Coal Operations on the Main Board
of Grinaker-LTA Mining Contracting during 2003. He occupied this position, being
responsible for marketing, contract negotiations, contract management, tendering,
strategic planning etc, up to March 2008 when he resigned from Grinaker-LTA to
explore the industry opportunitiies in his private capacity.
During the period of emplyment with Grinaker-LTA he successfully planned and
executed the establishment of some 11 mining projects for all major clients such as
Xstrata, Exxaro, Anglo Coal and Kangra Coal.
He engaged with various companies in a contracting, consulting and mineral
development capacity.
His clients included Sentula, Total Coal South Africa, Elitheni Coal and various
others.
His expertise being Mining Services such as Contract Mining , Underground
Construction and Engineering Capital Projects and Refurbishments and
Procurement Services. He has been extensively involved in setting up all
management and legal framework systems for small mining companies to
successfully operate within the legal framework set by the industry.
Current focus areas
Project Manager assignment with Ecca Group on the development of various mining
assets.
Developing a programme for the development of resources for a private mining
entity.
Managing the revival programme of a fabrication workshop in Lydenburg.
Assist with marketing of the Sandbox Mining wireless monitoring technology.
Managing a programme for the Development of a Legal Compliance framework for a
Junior Mining Company
He also played a critical role in developing a unique business review, team
development and productivity improvement programme which has been implemented
at large companies including Sasol Mining. The latest development includes a unique

2. leadership development programme, which is currently being rolled out in Sasol
Mining.
He also developed a number of concepts for skills development, community
development and LED projects, which is currently being discussed with some mining
companies including Anglo linked BEE entities. Some of the concepts include
Community centres, mobile bakeries, Industrial Centres including Manufacturing
facilities, warehouse, skills development centre and life skills centre.
He has a passion for innovation, new ideas and the improvement of local
communities and living standards, reduction of poverty levels and improved lifestyle
of people involved in the industry.
A Mauritian based Consulting Company ( Belmin Consulting Limited) was also
established to service International clients with Technical and Consulting Services.
He is a keen 4 x 4 enthusiast and Harley Davidson fan who enjoys travel and quiet
nights around a boma fire.
