The document discusses how the product uses and develops conventions of real teen pop magazines. It summarizes that the cover uses coverlines, images next to coverlines, secondary images, and placement of elements like the masthead and main image following conventions. The contents page similarly incorporates images, colors, shapes, headings and dynamic text used in magazines. The double page spread challenges some conventions by placing the main image on the left, but includes secondary images and different text colors for questions and answers as seen in interviews.
Question 1: In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
1. Question 1:
In what ways does your product
use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media
products?
2. Skylines are not always seen on pop magazines but I
thought I’d include one as a way of advertising posters
Front Cover
I have put my Masthead
on the top centre. I
made two of the V’s Pink
as the idea is used on
the ‘We Love Pop’
magazine.
I’ve made a
slogan also as
this is a
convention of
teen pop
magazines
I developed the
idea of lines. I used
them on the cover a
lot as I thought it
was a recurring
theme in teen pop
magazine examples
I have used lots of
coverlines as they fill
up a lot of teen pop
magazine’s covers.
I made sure any
images I used were
put next to coverlines
as this was a featured
convention on teen
pop magazines
I used a two
secondary
images also as
they are very
common on teen
pop magazines
My Main Coverline is
placed on the left side of
the page. This challenges
the normal conventions of
a pop magazine. However,
I think for the image I used
the coverline looked better
on the left.
I changed the colour of text to
highlight important words. I
saw this used on pop
magazines all the time and I
thought it would be important
to include it.
I tried to use
diagonal lines
within my
cover
My main image is female who are
commonly used as the model for
the image. She is also on the right
column of the thirds which follows
the convention ‘Rule Of Thirds’
Barcode,
issue number
and price
I included different shapes
as they added excitement
and something different.
These are seen on pop
magazines a lot
3. Examples I’ve looked at used a lot of
overlapping so I incorporated this onto my
contents page
Contents Page
I saw that ‘Top Of
the Pops’
magazine used an
image of their
front cover
I have used the
colour scheme of
pink, white, yellow
and blue. This is
because it linked
with my front cover,
and also were
commonly used
colours of teen pop
magazine’s contents
pages.
I saw one magazine
incorporate shapes
into their contents
page. So I used love
hearts dotted around.
I also included an image ‘banner’. I noted the use of these on front
covers and content pages a lot. I thought it would be an interesting
feature to use in my design as it makes the page look busier.
I used the idea of
diagonal lines a lot
here, I wanted it to
look exciting like
teen pop
magazines
I wrote headings for
each section – I got
this from teen pop
mag examples. They
used them to narrow
the contents down
I used lots different
colours and different
sized text when
talking of the
featured articles –
this is a convention
used in teen pop
magazines to make
the page look more
dynamic.
I have used lots of
images on this
page as it was a
regular thing I
found on content
pages for pop
magazines
4. Double Page Spread make my page more
To
I made sure I used Drop Cap
as this is a common feature
of pop magazine articles
The ‘We Love Pop’
magazine used a
asymmetrical shape
behind the artist’s
name. I did the same
thing expect made
the shape
translucent pink like
the speech marks.
interesting I made the
speech marks larger, pink
and translucent.
I put my main image
on the left hand side
of the double page
spread. This is
because the image
worked better this
side. However in teen
pop magazines the
main image is usually
conventionally on the
right.
Many pop magazines
used quotations as the
title of the page – it
draws the reader in
Every double
page spread I
saw contained
secondary
images. I chose
one that was
from a different
time than my
main image.
A lot of the double
page spreads were
interviews. So I
followed this trend. I
used different
colours for questions
and answers.
I challenged another convention by using
a caption. They are not always used on
double page spreads, but I felt my article
needed one.
Not a lot of pop magazine articles use Pull
Quotes from research. However, I decided it
would be another feature to make a reader
interested in the article.
