‘ No Joke Magazine’ Evaluation Isaac Mohammed
This is the front cover of my magazine and I got he inspiration from a hip hop magazine called ‘The Source’. I got the idea of having skylines for my magazine because there are many Hip-Hop magazine with this feature. I chose to use very popular Hip-Hop artists to make the magazine more interesting. From my research I found a lot of Hip-Hop magazine which had a image of a well-known artist and their name and motto under their image. My main colors for my magazine are green, yellow and black which is a very good style and these colors are quite similar to my magazine as they use green, yellow and white. I also used a barcode for my magazine to make it look more realistic and my comparison magazine has the same but in a different position in its magazine. I got the name of my magazine from my teacher evaluation as I told it was a very serious and truthful so that is how I got the idea of ‘NO JOKE!’ as the masthead. For my magazine I used blocks of colors to make the straplines look more eye-catching. The straplines look like headlines and tell the reader what is featured in the magazine. As you can see from the from my magazine the Hip-Hop artist I used is ‘N-Y-B’ and his head is just covering the masthead and I got the idea from this magazine as it also does the same. Other similarities include the serious expression on both of the artists faces and the layout of the magazine. The target audience for my magazine are teenagers and young people interested in Hip-Hop and Rap. These are also the genres of the magazine.
The name of my magazine is NO JOKE! and I got the name a friend who helped me think of a good name and it also goes with the genre of the magazine which is serious hip-hop news. The image also relates to the magazine because the hip-hop artist N-Y-B is dressed in street clothes which is most hip-hop artists dress code nowadays. The image is frame from the artists head to the elbows and is perfectly taken and put right in the middle of the cover. The main aim of this image is to let the audience know who the main star for this weeks edition is. The colours that I have used are three main colours which are green, yellow and black and are colour them for the magazine. The mood the colours create is a serious, clean, not happy nor sad mood. The image also relates to the audience because most people that listen to Hip-Hop are teenagers and the artist on the cover is also a teenager. Also the audience can interact with the magazine because the artist is making eye-contact with the audience. I also used a block of colour for the main title of my straplines so the audience can immediately know what different stories the magazine includes. For the most rare and exclusive strapline I changed the colour of the text and colour of colour to make it stand out from the other straplines because it is very important.
I got the idea of having a model on the right hand side of my magazine from this magazine which I found in my research. I chose this image it is a straight forward the pose looks serious and it also goes with the name of my magazine which is ‘No Joke’.
This is the contents page for my magazine and I carried on the same theme of the magazine and kept the colours from the magazine cover which are green, black and yellow. I used only four images in the contents page; one is the main image and the other three are about the stories and articles inside the magazine. I used a border around three of the images to make them look neat. For the masthead ‘Contents’ I put it in the middle of two colours which are green and black and I have change the text colour to make it stand out more and look more eye-catching. The text colour is yellow but I have changed some main words to make them stand out and look more colourful. In the middle of the page I used a music note image washed out/faded in the background to fill the black space in the background. The features that I have used to make the magazine sell are the contrasting colours in the ‘Other news’ section because it looks unique and professional style. Also in the top-right corner of the page I have put the logo of the magazine which I also used for the double page spread. That is the official logo which I made myself. The text that I used is striking and stands out and I have tilted it slightly to make it look less boring and noticeable.
I found this magazine in my research and I got most of my ideas for my double page spread from here such as the story title which is at the bottom of the page across the page. Also another similarity is that all the images for my magazine are on the left side of my magazine just like the contrasting magazine. All the text for my magazine is on this side on my magazine and the idea to put it here from this magazine below which has many similarities to my magazine. Also the size and amount of text used for the two magazines is also about the same.
I used a border around the image I took to make them look more professional and make them eye-catching. I took some of the images at different times and places to show the audience that the young talented artist has already visited many places and events The text for my double page spread is organised in columns going down and there are two columns and I have used paragraphs to separate the different questions and this is done to make the interview look neat and tidy. I also used gridlines to put everything on my double page spread in correct lining. I used the gridlines to make the images perfectly aligned next to each other and they are very important because they help to keep everything on the page aligned and very professional. The double page spread is to inform the audience about this new talent to let the audience know a bit of his background and what he will be doing in future. The title of the article is ‘N-Y-B Uncovered’ which means the hip-hop artists N-Y-B ‘s story and what he is up to at this stage in his life. The images have been put in a pattern like I have put one large portrait of the artist first and then three different images all the same size in a column. The text and image ratio is even because the images cover one side of the page and the text covers the other side. I have also used a quote at the top of the page which is very popular in magazines and is used to let the audience know what the artist is talking about or a hint.
