Reported Speech
Speech
In the English language, there are two
ways of conveying what someone else has
said:
•direct/quoted speech and
•indirect/reported speech.
Direct Speech
What is it?
Direct/quoted speech, involves quoting the exact
words uttered by the person, within inverted commas
or quotation marks.
2nd September 2012 Anne said, “I will
be coming home
tonight”.
Anne said, “I will
be coming home
tonight”.

Indirect Speech
Indirect/reported speech, on the other hand, does not
have to be within quotes or reported word-to-word. In
fact, unless one is relaying the exact words spoken, one
should never use quotation marks.
5th September 2012 She said that she
would be coming
home that night.
She said that she
would be coming
home that night.

Reported
speech
• When the reporting verb is in the past tense,
all present tenses in the direct speech will
change into the corresponding past tenses
• For example, the simple present will become
simple past.
• He said, ‘I want to go.’
• He said that he wanted to go.
• She said, ‘I am coming.’
• She said that she was coming.
• He said, ‘I have finished.’
• He said that he had finished.
• When we report questions, the indirect
speech is introduced by verbs such as asked,
inquired etc.
• He said to me, ‘What are you doing there?’
• He asked me what I was doing there.
• If the reporting verb is in the present tense,
the tenses in the direct speech do not change.
• He says, ‘He is leaving.’
• He says that he is leaving.
There are two types of questions:
1.Information questions (wh questions):
• Reported questions change the word order
• You usually write asked to introduce the reported
sentence
When will Sally and Tom come
for dinner?
Peter asked me
when you would
come for dinner
2. Yes/No questions
•If/whether is used to introduce reported questions that
do not start with wh words.
‘Is it windy
today?’Kevin asked his
grandfather if it was
windy that day
C. Commands
In commands you change the imperative into
infinitive
‘Go and do your homework’
Paul told his son to go and do his
homework
‘Don’t kiss me’
Chris told his mother not to kiss
him
The introductory verb in commands is
told+object
Indirect Speech of Imperative
Sentence
A sentence which expresses command, request,
advice or suggestion is called imperative
sentence.
For example,
• Open the door.
• Please help me.
• Learn your lesson.
• To report an Yes/No question, we
use if or whether.
• He said to me, ‘Are you interested?’
• He asked me if I was interested.
• He said to them, ‘Will you listen to such a
man?’
• He asked them whether they would listen to
such a man.
• When we report commands and requests, the
indirect speech is introduced by verbs expressing
a command or request. Examples are: ordered,
requested, commanded, shouted etc.
• The master said to the servant, ‘Go away.’
The master ordered the servant to go away.
• He said to them, ‘Please wait here till I return.’
He requested them to wait there till he returned.

Sentence which expresses state of joy or sorrow
or wonder is called exclamatory sentence.
For example.
