3. Linguistics
Phonology involves two studies:
A. Phonetics: The study of the production,
transmission, and reception of speech sound.
B. Phonemic: the study of the sounds and sound
patterns of a specific language.
4. Phonology – a branch of linguistics
Phonology ( a branch of linguistics)
A. Phonetics B. Phonemics
Acoustic Auditory Articulatory
(Properties) (Perception) (Articulation)
• Involves the study of Phonetics & Phonemics
5. Definition of Phonetics
• Phonetics is a branch of
linguistics. It is the scientific
study of speech sounds.
6. Phonetics is the study of speech
sounds.

7. Three stages in speech chain
• The production of the message (Articulatory)
• The transmission of the message (Acoustic)
• The reception of the message (Auditory)
8. Phonology
• Phonology is how speech sounds are organized
and affect one another in pronunciation.
• It deals with the system and pattern of sounds
which exist within a particular language.
• The study of phonology of English looks at the
vowels, consonants and suprasegmental features
of the language ( stress, intonation)
9. Phonology
• When we talk about vowels and consonants,
within the discipline of phonology, we are
referring to the different sounds we make when
speaking, and NOT the vowel and consonant
letters we refer to when talking about spelling
11. • In any language we can identify a small number of
regularly used sounds (vowels and consonants) that we call
PHONEMES.
• A phoneme is the smallest contrastive unit in the sound
system of a language.
• For Example:
• PIN PEN
• PET BET
12. • When we speak we produce a CONTINUOUS
STREAM OF SOUNDS.
• In studying speech we divide this stream into
small pieces that we call SEGMENTS.
• For Example: MAN
m æ n
Segments
13. What is the difference between
phonetics and phonology?
Phonology deals with the sound systems languages
Phonetics deals with the physical realisation of the elements of the sound
system, e.g. how the sound is physically produced (articulatory phonetics), or
the acoustic characteristics of the speech sound (acoustic phonetics)
