1. Who are the people in the photograph?
1. Middle aged women cooking in a kitchen, and one woman who seems to be “in charge.”
2. I believe that the main person in this photograph is Adolf Hitler, a very small boy, and two
middle aged women.
3. There are white police officers and black protestors in this picture.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
1. I believe that the situation in the photograph is women who are cooking for the woman in the
center of the photograph. I’m not sure what it’s for, but the woman in the center is the only
person who isn’t cooking and she is clearly wearing nicer clothes than the other woman. So I
would say that in this photograph the women cooking are doing it for some kind of big get
together for the woman in the middle.
2. I believe that the situation is Hitler doing some kind of campaign in Germany meeting people
and children.
3. The situation in this picture is that there are black protestors, clearly a part of some peaceful
protest probably led by MLK, and the white police officers have sent their dogs to attack one of
the black men in the street.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
1. It may or may not have had a direct purpose other than just a picture taken for memory or
something of that sort. At this time period, which we think we have determined based on
multiple factors in the photo, women were known to be the only people in the kitchen so this
wasn’t a point to be made. It was a well-known occurrence for women to be the ones preparing
a meal. I think the only point maybe being made was that women could be in charge too, and
the fact that she’s wearing pants is important because it’s showing a change in time.
2. I think the obvious purpose of this photograph was to make Hitler look friendly and nice. When
adults are shown in pictures with children I feel like it’s supposed to make them look good
because if a kid likes you then that says a lot.
3. I think the purpose was to show that these black people were treated so horribly when they
were doing nothing wrong. You can see that this young black man was not fighting back at all,
nor are the people in the streets, yet he’s being attacked so viscously.
Why is this photograph important to history?
1. I think this photo reiterates the fact that women handle cooking and preparing meals. What we
noticed is that the woman in the center of the photograph is wearing pants, which was
probably not common so we believe this shows a sign of coming change with women being
treated equally to men.
2. 2. Obviously Hitler was an important part of history so I think at this point in time, we as the world,
realize that what Hitler did was probably the worst event in history. So to see him smiling with a
very little kid and people smiling with him is just crazy to see.
3. This picture is so important to history because it showed how bad they were treated and how
sad it is that these people who were done so wrong when they were just trying to get their
points across nicely.
What questions does this photograph raise?
1. The photograph raises the question of what they were cooking for. It also raises the question
of why the woman in the center is wearing pants, and why none of the other women were.
Lastly, I think it raises the question of when exactly it was taken, then maybe we would have
an idea for the answers to the question.
2. I wonder what this child knew about him, I also think that it raises the question of where this
was taken and when. Was it before the Holocaust began?
3. It really made me wonder, more than anything, what happened after this photo was taken.
Absolutely more than anything it scares me to think about the result of the dog attacks. I also
wonder which protest this was.
Write your own caption for the photograph:
1. “Women Preparing a Family Meal”
2. “Hitler”
3. “Peaceful?”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?
1. I could search for which time period women started wearing pants, or when electronic mixers
became available and when they plugged into the ceiling,
2. I could look more into his campaigning and how people reacted to him once the Holocaust was
over.
3. I could look up some of the peaceful protests and maybe how these dog attacks turned out.
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph
1. The first thing I observed in the photograph is that there are only women wearing dresses but
one is wearing pants so you can infer that this photograph was when women started being
able to wear pants, the second thing I observed is that there is an electric mixer plugged into
the ceiling so it isn’t an extremely old photograph, the third thing you can infer based on my
observations is that they must live on some type of farm based on the huge milk containers in
the floor.
3. 2. You could infer that this was probably during his campaigning because he was shaking hands
with the young boy and it doesn’t look like he was permanently there to spend time there. I
also think that you can see that it’s in Germany based on the young boys clothing.
3. You could infer from this that peaceful protests were not always peaceful. You can also infer
that the people are used to this happening based on how they don’t look surprised in the
background.
