This document discusses the resources required for organizing guidance services in schools. It identifies physical resources like a separate room, furniture, information materials, testing materials and electronic gadgets. Human resources should include the principal, teachers, a counselor/guidance master, parents, students, medical staff and community experts. Financial resources are needed for programming, personnel, equipment and facilities. Proper utilization of physical, human and financial resources is necessary for a successful school guidance program.
2. INTRODUCTION
• Guidance is that aspect of the educational programme which is
concerned with helping a pupil (s) to get adjusted to his/her
present situation and to plan the future in terms of ones
interest, abilities and social needs
• A good guidance programme is therefore one of the essential
requirement of a good school.
• If the guidance programme is to make its impact felt on the
growth and development of the child and improve the quantity
and quality of the educational programme, it must be an
organised service of the school.
3. • So long as it remains an incidental activity and is
left to the good sense of teachers, much of its
significance as an educative process is lost.
• The successful organisation of the guidance and
counselling programme depends to a large
extent upon the resources of the school.
• The resources required for organising guidance
service in schools may be discussed under
different heads:
5. • Separate room – Schools should be able to afford a
separate room with enough space for staff and records of
the entire school population, or else should make effort to
set aside a peaceful separate corner for the purpose.
• Furniture- Chairs, tables, cupboards, filing cabinets
• Proper lighting arrangement
• Information materials - The information materials like
posters, charts, leaflets, monographs, newsletters,
notification of jobs and training courses, advertisement of
scholarships should be displayed if they are to serve the
purpose well .
• Walls, bulletin boards, display racks and display windows
are required for the above purpose.
6. • A stock register - It is essential to maintain a stock
register in which guidance literature, as soon as it
is received, should be entered by the guidance
master.
• Proceedings register - It is also important to
maintain a proceedings register to record all the
activities concerning guidance programme
regularly.
• Books related to guidance and counselling
• Other electronic gadgets like tape recorder, CD
player, computer, projector, etc.
7. • With the advancement of information technology, teachers can
easily access related websites for information and references on
guidance.
• Teachers can also make use of electronic mails to exchange
information and views related to student guidance with teachers of
the same school and/or other schools easily.
• At the same time, students’ opinion could be solicited through
electronic means when teachers plan and evaluate guidance
programmes.
• In addition, chatting with students (higher secondary level
students) through electronic means could be an effective way to
reach them and start building up mutual relationship with them.
8. • Testing materials / Testing library : In order to assess an
individual’s skill and traits, educational potentialities and
deficiencies standardised psychological tests may be used by the
counsellor or guidance master.
• The psychological tests should also meet the needs of the
students at the end of the ten/twelve year schooling. It should
enlighten students whether to join the work force or to take up
vocational, or academic courses of study or to prepare for
entrance to the first degree class in the college according to their
interest and aptitude.
• Diagnostic tests, which help in directing attention to remedial
programmes of education, deserve a special place in the guidance
set-up of the school which function mainly for the average and
below average socio-economic levels.
• Efforts should be made to gradually build up a test library.
10. The Principal/ Headmaster
• Occupies an important position in the school guidance program.
• The principal should assume proper leadership role and be a source of
inspiration to other guidance personnel.
• In consultation with the counsellor/ career master and other members
of the staff the headmaster may prepare a yearly plan of the guidance
program, make provision for time and allocate duties to the other
staff.
11. TEACHERS
• One guidance master or counsellor will not be able to
achieve much in a multifaceted programme like
guidance.
• The active co-operation of a band of teachers interested
in guidance must be secured. Other teachers must also
assist in the implementation of guidance activities.
• They can contribute to the guidance programme by
supplying data for cumulative record cards.
12. Counsellor/ Guidance master
• A trained counsellor/guidance master is the
nerve centre of the guidance programme in any
school.
• It may be his/her function to coordinate the
efforts of several teachers in the school in the
collection of pupil data, to initiate group
guidance procedures and to do individual
counselling.
• Schools may engage a trained Counsellor or a
Career master or both if feasible.
13. The parents – For successful organisation of a school guidance
programme arrangement should be made to enlist the support
of parents and to introduce them to the idea of guidance. No
programme can function successfully in a school unless parents
feel convinced of its utility.
Students – The Students are considered an important
component of any school guidance programme.
Without the participation of students no guidance program
would be possible.
In order to encourage students’ active participation in the
guidance programme, they should be made members of
different guidance clubs on the basis of their educational and
vocational interests. Clubs such as the Home Science club,
photography club, Hiking club, Science club, art club, literary
club may be formed.
14. Human resources may also include
• Medical staff
• The Physical Education Teacher (P.E.T.)
• A Few experts in different fields drawn from the
community
• Librarian
15. Financial Resource
• In organizing guidance activities, funds are required for various purposes:
Programme Funds
Remuneration for counsellors or career-
masters
Fund for equipping the counselling room or
office – files and folders, ICT, psychological
tests
Construction of conference hall, etc.
16. In conclusion, it may be mentioned that availability and
proper utilisation of physical resources, cooperation and
dedication of human resources and proper allocation and
management of financial resources are necessary for the
successful and purposeful organisation of guidance
service in schools.
