The Byzantine Empire experienced a period of decline between the 11th and 15th centuries AD. This included military defeats that led to loss of territories in Asia Minor, Syria, and southern Italy. The Fourth Crusade culminated in the sacking and conquest of Constantinople in 1204, dividing Byzantine lands until recapture in 1261. Finally, in 1453 the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople, marking the end of the Byzantine Empire.
