ORGANIC ACIDS
CREATED BY: AZIZ KHAN
ORGANIC ACIDS
Organic acids are acids that has a carbon
skeleton.
Organic compounds with acidic properties.
Organic acids partially dissociate in neutral
aqueous solution and are generally
considered as weak acids.
The three major types of Bronsted-Lowery
acids are Carboxylic acids, Phenol and
alcohols.
1)CARBOXYLIC ACIDS:
•Carboxylic acids are the
most common and most
acidic organic
compounds.
•Much stronger acids then
water, alcohols and
phenols.
2) PHENOLS
•Phenols are more acidic
than alcohols but less
acidic than carboxylic
acid.
•phenol pKa value is 10-10 .
•Benzene ring is electron
with drawing , so it will
stabilize the phenoxide
ion.
3.ALCOHOLS
• Alcohols are acidic in nature because it provide
hydrogen ion but it is very less acidic pka value =10 16 to
10 18
• Less acidic than water (10 7 ).
• -R group is electron donating group so it will destabilize
the alkoxide ion.
R-OH + H2O R-O- + H3O+.
APPLICATIONS OF ORGANIC
ACIDS
• Many of carboxylic acid are of immense importance
because of their uses in food and beverage ,industries
along with drugs and other manufacturing processes.
• Most common organic acid which are used in such
manufacturing are azeliac acid, fumeric acid, malic acid,
oxalic acid, tartaric acid and sebacic acid;
• Saturated long chain of monocarboxylic acid are basically
fatty acids.
• The organic acid are utilized in plastic making, textiles,
paper, metals, pharmaceutical, food industries as well as
in manufacturing of cosmetics.
• Also used in manufacturing of perfume , herbal
insecticides, color and dyes and common household
cleaners.
• Propionic acid are used in organic synthesis, used as
various fungicides and also as food preserving chemical.
• Lactic acid is used in adhesive, plastic and textile.
• Glycolic acids are used in leather, textile electroplating,
and metal cleaning industries.
• Citric and oxalic acids are used as rust removal. As acids,
they can dissolve they iron oxides.
• Organic acids are also used in food preservation
because of their effects on bacteria.
• Oxalic acid as used to clean iron and also used as a
bleach for wood, removing black stains caused by
dissolved iron that binds to the wood during water
penetration.
• Tartaric acid is a white crystalline organic acid which
occurs naturally in many plants particularly in grapes,
bananas and tamarinds.
• Also found in wine.
MANY OF ORGANIC ACIDS
ARE FOUND IN LIVING THINGS
