5. Wood 18th century during the Ottoman Empire.
British engineer and architect Peter Ellis designed Oriel Chambers
and 16 Cook Street, both located in Liverpool, England
In the U.S. ,Louis Curtiss-designed Boley Clothing Company building
was constructed in 1909 in Missouri
In 1918, architect Willis Polk built the Hallidie Building in San
Francisco
New York Lever House in Midtown Manhattan 1952 by the design
firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.
HISTORY OF CURTAIN WALLS :
The first building introduced with a curtain wall was the Crystal
Palace in the Great Exhibition held in London in 1851.

7. WHAT IS A CURTAIN WALL ?
• Non-structural
• Modernist movement because ornament free
• Cladding Skin Systems for the external walls of buildings
• Multi-storey Buildings
• Supporting their own weight and the loads that comes on them and transfering the total
weight on the main structure of the building
• Historical Buildings before curtain wall outside walls also carry weight.
• Typically curtain wall systems comprise a lightweight aluminum frame onto which glazed
or opaque infill panels can be fixed.
• Panels are called Glazing even if it is not glass material.
• Curtain wall systems started to be used in the 19th century when large glass panels were
developed and in 1930's aluminium started to be used as construction material.
• Curtain wall systems can be custom designed and manufactured, but are often
manufacturer's proprietary systems that can be bought 'off the shelf'. Custom-designed
systems are generally only cost effective for larger buildings.
• Types of curtain walls are: 'stick' system, or can be unitised :

10. WHAT IS A CURTAIN WALL ACCORDING TO CHING?
A CURTAIN WALL IS AN EXTERIOR WALL SUPPORTED BY THE STEEL OR
CONCRETE STRUCTURAL FRAME OF A BUILDING AND CARRYING
NO LOADS OTHER THAN ITS OWN WEIGHT AND WIND LOADS.
A CURTAIN WALL MAY CONSIST OF METAL FRAMING HOLDING
EITHER VISION GLASS OR OPAGUE SPANDREL UNITS, OR OF THIN
VENEER PANELS OF CONCRETE, STONE, MASONRY, OR METAL.
