8. People
• Empirical studies show that women
contribute significantly to the coffee industry
globally , 30% of coffee farm are female
operated and up to 70 % of labour in the
coffee industry are women depending on the
region and is particularly so in Africa.
• Publication by International Coffee
Organisation(2018) on gender equality
indicate that women have significantly lower
access to resources such as land ,credit and
information than men. This results in
significant gender parity in economic
outcomes that include yield ,productivity and
income from the farm
Planet
• It is evident that there is a benefit in closing the
gender gap and there is a role for all to play, research
institutions, Governments ,entrepreneurs , consumers
all working towards fostering empowerment and
achieving gender parity.
Profit
• The link between reduced inequality and improved
economic performance and living conditions has been
widely documented. Gender equality and human
development are positively correlated and most
research concludes that reduced inequalities promote
economic growth(world bank 2012)
Gender Perspectives in the coffee Industry
11. Gap Closure
• Establish a coffee fund specifically targeted at women and
youth in Africa.
• Create/establish Traceability from cup to farm for sustainable
production and consumption specifically targeting coffee
produced by women and youth.
• Governments to provide extension officers and trainings to be
structured considering women needs and specifically focusing
on climate change mitigation in the coffee industry
• Implementing the Sustainable Consumption and Production
program. Women and youth to lead the campaign for
domestic consumption supported by government
• Best practice sharing among women in coffee in Africa
• Affirmative action for youth and women in the leadership
across the coffee value chain at the decision tables.
12. Coffee the path to the ‘Africa we want’
Role of Coffee cannot be overemphazised:
• Foreign exchange earner
• Source of employment and family incomes for millions of small holder farmers
• Provides employment directly and indirectly along the coffee value chain
• A source of income and food security
• Main player in poverty eradication.
• The sub-sector is key to the central agricultural role in contributing and realizing
of African Union ‘the Africa we want’ vision 2063
• Provides a platform to swing African to the global arena.
• Inclusive and sustainable development and enhancing the affirmative action on
youth and women is a concrete manifestation of the drive for unity, self-
determination, freedom, progress and collective prosperity.
