FLIP FLOP TRIGGERING

Introduction to Flip-Flops
Flip-flops are devices used in the digital field for a variety of purposes.
When properly connected, flip-flops may be used to store data
temporarily, to multiply or divide, to count operations, or to receive and
transfer information.
Flip Flop Triggering
● When the flip-flop is triggered to update its output state on the
rising or falling edge of the clock pulse, then it is called edge
triggering method.
● If the flip-flop is triggered when the clock pulse goes from low to
high (positive edge), then it is called positive edge-triggering
method.
Types of Flip Flop
● Latch or Set-Reset (SR) flip-flop.
● JK flip-flop.
● T (Toggle) flip-flop.
● D (Delay or Data) flip-flop.

Asynchronous vs Synchronous Triggering
● All flip flips in a synchronous counter are triggered simultaneously
by the same clock.
● Various flip-flops are activated with different clocks rather than
simultaneously in an asynchronous counter.
● Asynchronous counters operate more slowly than synchronized
counters.
Synchronous Triggering
● Synchronous triggers must complete before further operations can
continue.
● They are typically run when the event is initiated but before it
finishes.
● The event completion is dependent on their success. Triggers are
run synchronously by default.
Asynchronous Triggering
● Asynchronous trigger is a change event trigger which run
asynchronously after a database transaction is completed.
● The async execution of change event trigger makes them ideal for
processing resource-intensive business logic in separate
transaction from database transaction.
Edge-Triggered vs. Level-Triggered Flip-Flops
● Edge triggering is frequently used in synchronous circuits, such as
counters and flip-flops.
● Level triggering is frequently employed in applications that call for
continuous monitoring of an input signal, such as data acquisition
and control systems.
Positive Edge-Triggered vs Negative Edge-
Triggered Flip-Flops
● Positive edge triggering is indicated by a triangle at the clock
terminal of the flip-flop.
● Negative edge triggering is indicated by a triangle with a bubble at
the clock terminal of the flip-flop. Different types of edge triggered
flip-flop include edge-triggered S-R flip-flop, D flip-flop and J-K flip-
flop.
