1. VOL: VII No: 7 ‐ October 2016From the Founder's Desk
Dear Friends,
I had an opportunity to visit Amritapuri
and participate in the celebrations of
revered Mata Amritanandamayi -
popularly known as Amma. From
Mysore to Amritapuri is about 500 kms
and it took me a 13 hour-journey by road. It was a
rather long journey for my age, but I undertook it to
enjoy the beautiful sceneries of God’s own country
Kerala.
My friend Mr. Arun Kumar along with his son
accompanied me throughout. Arun is a great devotee
of Amma. In fact, he and Br. Krishna of Mysore Math
were the inspiration behind our visit to Amma's birth
place. Arun's company made this journey a satsang. I
never felt the passage of time through the long trip, he
enlightened me about Amma. His company
enhanced my understanding of this great divine soul
and transformed me into a devotee by the time we
reachedAmritapuri.
Parayakadavu is a small fishermen's village situated
on a coastal strip of land in Kollam District. It is
sandwiched between the backwaters and the Arabian
sea. This is the birth place of Amma. Today it has
grown into Amritapuri, the headquarters of Amma's
worldwide mission and the spiritual home forAmma's
monastic disciples and hundreds of householder
devotees. This place now attracts followers from
across India and abroad coming here to have
Amma's darshan and seek her blessings.
Can anyone imagine that a girl born in a remote
village that too in a lower caste family and a school
dropout at an early age, could today become
renowned the world-over and be known for her
humanitarian activities across the globe. Amma is
the living example of such a divine leela. This proves
divinity has no boundaries like caste, creed and
class.
It seems Amma’s mission is to transform humanity
through the power of the Divine Hug. She is popularly
known as “The Hugging Saint”. Throughout her life,
Amma has embraced and comforted more than 34
million people. Amma inspires, uplifts, and
transforms through her embrace.
I am one among the lakhs of people who had
gathered to experience Her birthday at Her
birthplace. Her universal message of Love is
eternal. On this note,
I wish you all a very happy Dasara and Deepavali.
Happy reading....

What did Lord Ganesha do, as the story goes,
when he swallowed a mighty demon and
developed a burning sensation in his stomach?
What did Jesus Christ ask his followers to eat to
cure themselves of disease? What did Sushrutha,
the father of surgery, use to heal the injuries and
wounds of his patients? What did Chandragupta
Maurya use to heal his soldiers wounded in battle?
How did Arab traveler Ibn-e-Batuta cure the
plague? And how about the Babylonian king
Nebuchadnezzar, who built the Hanging Gardens
of Babylon? How did he get rid of his sickness of
seven years?
The answer is the same: they all cured themselves
with wheatgrass: rightly called the panacea for all
ills.
The Father of Modern Medical Science and the
great Greek philosopher Hippocrates said Let thy
food be thy medicine. Our body has the inbuilt
ability to heal itself if provided proper nutrition,
environment and exercise.
Modern diets lack healthy foods and lack
antioxidants that are the building blocks of good
health. Moreover, the food that we eat today may
contain additives, coloring, pesticides and
preservatives. Every day we are exposed to air,
noise and water pollution. All these contribute to the
increase of free radicals in our bodies & could
cause degenerative diseases. This is where good
foods like wheatgrass come into the picture. The
blade of grass contains all the revitalizing and
rebuilding materials for the body. It is a producer of
energy and eliminator of waste acids.
What is Wheatgrass? Wheatgrass is a food
prepared from the cotyledons of the common
wheat plant. It is sold either as a juice or powder
concentrate. Wheatgrass is allowed to grow longer
than malt. It contains chlorophyll, amino acids,
minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. It is often
available in juice bars, and some consumers grow
and juice wheatgrass in their homes. It is available
as fresh produce, tablets, frozen juice and powder.
Wheatgrass is also available commercially as a
spray, cream, gel, massage lotion, and a liquid
herbal supplement. Because wheatgrass juice is
extracted from wheatgrass sprouts, it is gluten-
free. In short, wheatgrass is Nature's gift to
mankind. The beneficial nutrients naturally
obtained from Wheatgrass help promote health
and healing to our body.
Background: Grass is the perfect food. After all,
grasses are the primary food for domestic and wild
grazing animals and even for some pretty large
ones like elephants, rhinoceros and hippopotamus
etc. Dogs and cats nibble on grass, when ill.
History: Wheatgrass is renowned for its
therapeutic value for over 5000 years, to ancient
Egypt and early Mesopotamian civilizations.
Ancient Egyptians found that it had a positive effect
on their health and vitality. The consumption of
wheatgrass in the Western world began in the
1930s as a result of experiments conducted by
Charles Schnabel. Ann Wigmore, founder of the
Hippocrates Health Institute, found that
wheatgrass, as part of a raw food diet, would
cleanse the body of toxins while providing a proper
balance of nutrients as a whole food.
Wheatgrass: Panacea for all Ills
3. Why Wheatgrass: Wheatgrass contains
chlorophyll the power of sunlight in condensed
form. Since we are light beings having spirit and
soul and bodies, the light force vibrates through the
physical body, that's the energy you feel. That's
why wheatgrass is a spiritual food. It nourishes you
on spiritual level as well as physical level.
The molecular structure of chlorophyll in
wheatgrass resembles a substance hemin in
human blood. Hence wheatgrass is called as
Green Blood. The pH value of blood and
wheatgrass both are about 7 and is quickly
absorbed in the blood since it has oxygen in
diffusible state. Chlorophyll fights bad breath, body
odor and acts as an antiseptic, killing harmful
anaerobic bacteria. Chlorophyll protects us from
harmful radiations from x-rays, TV, computers,
mobiles and microwave. Chlorophyll helps all the
organs of the body function better.
Nutritional Content: Wheatgrass has the ability to
absorb maximum nutrients from the soil. It is a rich
source of vitamins (A,B-B12,C,E,K), minerals,
amino acids, enzymes, chlorophyll, and dietary
fiber. It contains more than 90 different nutritious
substances. Wheatgrass is also a source of protein
and essential fatty acids.
Benefits: It helps in:
Restoring the damaged neurons and organ
damage
Behavior modification
Restoring intuitive intelligence
Complete mind-body cleansing
Optimizing hormonal balance
Maintaining blood sugar level & cholesterol level
Preventing constipation
Drinking wheatgrass juice detoxifies the blood and
strengthens the immune system and prevents
inflammation. It leads to more energy and an
improved ability to combat and reverse illness. It
stops free radicals and provides anti-oxidants
promoting cellular rejuvenation. It inhibits
carcinogens, neutralizes pesticides and enhances
stamina and endurance. Wheatgrass is hence
called panacea on earth.
Cultivation: Wheatgrass can be grown indoors or
outdoors. A common method for sprout production
indoors is often on trays. Leaves are harvested
when they develop a "split" as another leaf
emerges. These are then cut off and allow a
second crop of shoots to form. Wheatgrass grown
is harvested, dehydrated at a low temperature and
sold in tablet and powdered concentrates for
human and animal consumption. Indoor grown
wheatgrass is used to make wheatgrass juice
powder.
Wheatgrass juice is best taken on an empty
stomach.
Conclusion: Use natural sunlight for healthy
bones and organs, good live water as an essential
solvent for nutrition, fruits & vegetables for their
high vitamins and fiber, berries, sprouts, legumes,
seeds, dry fruits, whole grains, and bran for their
carbs and phytonutrients.Avoid animal & fried fats,
white flour, chemical sweeteners, added sugar,
sodium, artificial colors and preservatives,
hydrogenated oils, refined grains. Add the ultimate
panacea, wheatgrass, to all this, and you are on the
high road to wellness.
“Until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature
will laugh at his scientific knowledge.”

Vijay Wellness Forum organised a talk on Stress
Management through Spiritual Means by Mr. Shivaram
of Sanatan Sanstha on Saturday, 27th August 2016 at
Vijay Foundation premises.
Sanatan Sanstha was founded in 1999 by Jayant Balaji
Athavale with the support of Bhaktaraj Maharaj. The aim
of the organization is to present spirituality in a scientific
language for the curious (Jignyasu) and to guide the
seekers.
Dr. BR Pai, welcoming the audience suggested that when
one goes to the roots of spirituality, the efforts will
automatically bear fruits.
Mr. Shivram started with a distinction between being
stressful and stress-free - being stressed leads to
sadness, whereas being stress-free leads first to
happiness and can lead to Ananda. Stress is our reaction
to external factors (around 20%) and internal factors
(around 80%). External factors could be: family,
economic condition, education, work, terrorism,
corruption, government, desires, health, environment,
society, politics and so on. Internal factors could be
weaknesses, ego, jealousy, sensitivity to doshas -
ancestral etc.
Management of Stress: Stress can be managed through
spiritual exercise or Sadhana of body, mind, intellect.
Sadhana of Body: Our strengths and weaknesses are
input through our 5 senses into the conscious mind and
processed by the unconscious mind as positive gunas
and negative doshas leading to our karma. We need to
strengthen our gunas and overcome our doshas. Do
Nama japa samskara - chant your deity's name for eg.,
Sri Venkateshaya Namah - yoga karmasu koushalam.
Sadhana of Mind: Achieve purity through pooja,
bhajans, love, bhakti.
Sadhana of Buddhi or Intellect: Thanks to our ego, we
have shifted from soham to aham. To get back to our
roots, we need to perform:
1. Prayer
2. Have anAttitude of Gratitude - yoga kshema
3. Attitude of learning from one and all
4. Atonement or prayaschitta
5. Acceptance of Love
Practical Solutions:
1. Meditate surrounded by pancha bhutas - sit
grounded surrounded by 4 boxes of size 6” or 12” on
four sides and perform nama japa for at least 10
minutes,
and / or
2. Sit with feet in salt water tub and perform nama japa
for at least 10 minutes.
These result in Improved Concentration.
Sanatan Sanstha's activities: Guru kripa yoga &
nama sankirtan yoga (helps merge atma with
paramatma), nama japa & guru deva datta (helps
remove dosha and aham). All these lead to bhava vrutti
(purity of thought).
