1. From the Founder's Desk Vol: VIII No: 2 January‐February 2019
DearFriends,
Recently, we conducted a workshop on
“Pain Management through Mudras”
which got a warm response from the
participants. Therefrom I got the idea
of bringing out an issue on Pain
Management ‐ hencethisissue.
Waking up in the morning with a small ache in the
back, head or any other part of our body may seem
like something that happens normally (and often).
Even though most of us suffer from one or the other
type of pain, if someone asks us about what pain is,
westartblinking. Isn’t it true?
Pain is an uncomfortable feeling that tells you something
may be wrong. It can be steady, throbbing, stabbing,
aching,pinching,orcanbedescribedinmanyotherways.
Sometimes, it's just a nuisance, like a mild headache.
Othertimesitcanbedebilitating.
Pain is a signal created within the body by your brain to
tellyousomethingisnotright.Whenwefeelpain,suchas
when we touch a hot stove, sensory receptors in our skin
send a message via nerve fibres (A‐delta fibres and C
fibres)tothespinalcordandbrainstemandthenontothe
brain where the sensation of pain is registered, the
informationisprocessedandthepainisperceived.
While a little pain here or there may not seem like a big
issue at first, acute pain may lead to chronic pain in the
future if left untreated. Living with chronic pain can make
eachdayseemlikeachallenge.
Pain can bring about other physical symptoms, like
nausea, dizziness, weakness or drowsiness. It can cause
emotional effects like anger, depression, mood swings or
irritability. Perhaps most significantly, it can affect your
lifestyle and impact your job, relationships and
independence.
I feel Pain Management is more about keeping yourself
healthy. Prevention of diseases and promotion of your
health is the key element in Pain Management practices ‐
that is nothing but a “Healthy Life Style” that you need to
adoptinourday‐to‐day life.

1. Drinking water helps to keep the body hydrated and
keep muscles functioning properly. When dehydrated,
nagging symptoms of headaches or back pain may
actuallygetworse.
2. If pain is severe enough, deep breathing may be
neededtohelpcalmthemindandbody.
3. To reduce strain on neck and back muscles, train your
bodytositwithcorrectposture.
4. Massages using pressure or tension to work out
knotted muscles can help to promote relaxation and
reduce inflammation and pain in the area receiving the
massage.
5. If these changes are not enough over time to help to
lessen the effects of your experienced pain, talk to your

What do headache, arthritis,cramps,inflammation, itching,
migraine all have in common? Pain, indeed! The
corresponding tissues are inflamed leading to heat, redness
or swelling, thereby causing pain, leading to dis‐ease. In
Ayurvedic terminology, imbalance of vata leads to pain,
imbalance of pitta leads to burning, heat and redness and
imbalanceinkaphaleadstocongestion.
WhatisPain?
Pain is a nuisance that we
have to put up with. Our
entire healthcare system is
built around trying to make
pain and symptoms “go
away”. In fact, pain is the
body's natural way of talking
to us. Pain is a lifesaver.
Without pain, we may bleed
to death. Pain goes away when the cause of the pain is
resolvedandthebodyhealsitself.
PainParameters
Rather than tackle pain itself, we need to know more about
the pain that is affecting us. How intense is the pain? How
does the pain feel? Where is the pain? What makes the pain
lessen? What makes the pain increase? When did the pain
start?Andmostimportantly,whydoesitoccur?
CausesofPain
The main cause of pain is our painful lifestyle ‐ bad diet,
sugar, fat, processed food, lack of exercise, stress, toxins,
etc. Unhealthy lifestyles with minimal movement or
exercisecantriggerpain.
If a person's immunity is good, the body will defend itself. If
the person's immunity is weak, he will have a weaker
response. When the body is attacked, chemicals from the
white blood cells are released into tissues to protect the
body from invaders, resulting in swelling or inflammation.

between mind and matter, going back and forth between
the two and influencing both”. Do you know that financial
fear can lead to back pain, stubborn nature can lead to knee
problems, refusal to see others' point of view can lead to
spondylitis, stress can lead to heart issues and inferiority
complextoulcers?
PAIN and its MANAGEMENT
- January & February 2019
Conventional health care simply controls pain rather than
actually resolving it or managing it. By understanding that
pain and inflammation are the underlying trigger
mechanisms to all ailments, we can prevent, reverse, and
treatmostchronicillnesses—includingcancer.
WellnessWaysofPainManagement
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps understand the
relationship between one's physiology (e.g., pain and
muscle tension), thoughts, emotions and behaviors. The
main treatment is helpful cognitive thought patterns,
leading to healthy activities such as regular exercise.
Lifestyle changes are made to improve sleep patterns and
to develop better coping skills for pain using various
techniques (e.g., relaxation, diaphragmatic breathing, and
biofeedback).
Reflexology involves application
of pressure to the feet and
hands with specific thumb,
finger and hand techniques.
There are specific points on our
hands and feet that correspond
to different organs in the body.
Stimulation of these points
during massage can cause
significant reduction in pain,
reduce fatigue and promote
bettersleep.
Acupuncture corrects imbalances
of flow at identifiable meridian
points close to the skin. Thin solid,
metallic needles penetrate the
skin and are manipulated,
ensuring that energy flow can be brought back into proper
balance. By stimulating the body's various systems,
acupuncture can resolve pain and the sicknesses
associatedwithit.
