Background of Study
• Indigenous knowledge on forest conservation is the
understanding, beliefs, and practices of indigenous people on the
sustainable use of forests gained through the protracted close tie
with their environment (Desalegn, 2013).
• As Guji Oromo believes, it is extrapolated that the trees are
natural vesture that God has grow on the land to cover the nudity
of the earth (Gemeda, 2021).

Background,…
• Also, the indigenous forest management agreements are
negotiated between the forest department and user groups
(society), rather than larger political or administrative units.
• However, in the study area the useful indigenous knowledge of
forests conservation practices has been reduced due to the
increasing population, Agricultural expansions, cultural
amalgamation, etc.
• So, this study aims to assess Guji’s indigenous forest
conservation practice in the Dugda Dawa District

Statement of the problem
• Desalegn (2013) state that, for a very long time, from the
Eurocentric approach to the education approach, the indigenous
knowledge has been reduced, and even, little attention was given
to it in formal schooling and modern conservation practices.
• Due to this Tura & Reddy (2015) revealed that, the pressure on
the resource from the human population could intensify and
impose more rapid and more degenerative changes on forest
resources, especially in the West Guji zone.

Statement,…
• Also, Tura & Reddy suggested that effective management
intervention was needed for future scenarios underline to
increase the quality of forest regeneration and accelerate the
growth of the young plants.
• Therefore, this study was aims to emphasized on assessing the
Guji’s indigenous forest conservation practices in the Dugda
Dawa District
• To explore the effective forest management intervention around
Guji society.

Conservation practices in the study area
• To identify the values of Guji’s indigenous forest conservation
practices
• To recognize the determinant factors of Guji’s indigenous forest
conservation practices in the study area
• To identify the challenges associated with the Guji’s indigenous
forest conservation practices

Sampling Techniques
• 1st Purposive sampling was used to select the Dugda Dawa
District from the West Guji Zone,
• 2nd Purposive sampling was also used to select study kebeles
from the Dugda Dawa District.
• Then, the Simple Random sampling method was used to select
household respondents.
• The Snowball sampling method was also implemented to get
basic information about the history of the indigenous forest
conservation practices in the Guji society.

Cont,…
• The quantitative data were analyzed by using
o mean,
o percentage,
o frequency distribution
• Through SPSS Version 20 and Microsoft Excel 2007
• The qualitative data were analyzed by
o narrative description, and
o interpreted on spot.
• Binary Logit Regression model was used.
o The Normality test and Multicollinearity test were undergone

Statistical Assumptions of Models
• Data Normality test: Both Kolmogorov-Smirnov, and Shapiro-Wilk tests
are significant.
• The skewness and kurtosis was lays
Symmetrically between +3 to -3
• Therefore, the data are collected from
Normally distributed populations.
• Multicollinearity test: All VIF ≈ 1, means there is no correlation between
a given predictor variable and any other predictor variables in the model.
• Therefore, Multicollinearity is not a problem in the model.

• which may not promote the cutting down of aged trees and
replacing them with young ones, a common practice in modern
forestry.

Values of Guji's Indigenous Forest Conservation
Practice in the study area
• They gate traditional medicines from the forests
• The respondents believe that the local people use traditional
medicines for primary health care due to the belief,
o in their effectiveness,
o the lack of modern medicines and medication
o as well as the poor economic status of the people.

Recommendations
Based on the findings of the study, the following
recommendations have been made.
• Better to facilitate the minimum energy consumption machine
for the people
• It is possible to discuss with the young about indigenous forest
conservation in the study area
• The local forest officer must pay attention to the indigenous
knowledge of elders in forest management

Recommendations,…
• The traditional community leaders must have been empowered on
forest management and integrated with the forest agency of the
kebele administration.
• It is also better to increase female participation on indigenous
forest conservation practices by changing and modernizing attitude
of Guji society toward the female.
• Also, more basic and applied research have to employed to
encourage the influences of the political system on indigenous
forest conservation in the Guji society.

  • 4. Background of Study • Indigenous knowledge on forest conservation is the understanding, beliefs, and practices of indigenous people on the sustainable use of forests gained through the protracted close tie with their environment (Desalegn, 2013). • As Guji Oromo believes, it is extrapolated that the trees are natural vesture that God has grow on the land to cover the nudity of the earth (Gemeda, 2021). 4 4 BHU Dep. • 5. Background,… • Also, the indigenous forest management agreements are negotiated between the forest department and user groups (society), rather than larger political or administrative units. • However, in the study area the useful indigenous knowledge of forests conservation practices has been reduced due to the increasing population, Agricultural expansions, cultural amalgamation, etc. • So, this study aims to assess Guji’s indigenous forest conservation practice in the Dugda Dawa District 5 5 BHU Dep. NRM MSc. Program in Sustainable NRM 2022 MSc. Thesis Presentation By Areri Ware 5
  • 6. Statement of the problem • Desalegn (2013) state that, for a very long time, from the Eurocentric approach to the education approach, the indigenous knowledge has been reduced, and even, little attention was given to it in formal schooling and modern conservation practices. • Due to this Tura & Reddy (2015) revealed that, the pressure on the resource from the human population could intensify and impose more rapid and more degenerative changes on forest resources, especially in the West Guji zone. 6 6 BHU Dep. NRM MSc. Program in Sustainable NRM 2022 MSc. Thesis Presentation By Areri Ware 6
  • 7. Statement,… • Also, Tura & Reddy suggested that effective management intervention was needed for future scenarios underline to increase the quality of forest regeneration and accelerate the growth of the young plants. • Therefore, this study was aims to emphasized on assessing the Guji’s indigenous forest conservation practices in the Dugda Dawa District • To explore the effective forest management intervention around Guji society. 7 7 BHU Dep.
