Mangalyaan
1.
2. WHAT IS IT ……
• The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also called
Mangalyaan "Mars-craft", is a spacecraft
orbiting Mars since 24 September 2014. It
was launched on 5 November 2013 by the
Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) It is
India's first interplanetary mission and ISRO
has become the fourth space agency to reach
Mars, after the Soviet space program, NASA,
and the European Space Agency. It is also the
first nation to reach Mars orbit on its first
attempt, and the first Asian nation to do so.
3. Costing ……
• The total cost of the mission was approximately $70
million and is the cheapest inter-planetary mission ever
to be undertaken since Martian exploration began. The
low cost of the mission was ascribed by Kopillil
Radhakrishnan, the chairman of ISRO, to various
factors, including a "modular approach", a small
number of ground tests and long (18-20 hour)
working days for scientists. BBC's Jonathan Amos
mentioned lower worker costs, home-grown
technologies, simpler design, and significantly less
complicated payload than NASA's MAVEN. An opinion
piece in The Hindu pointed out that the cost was
equivalent to less than a single bus ride for each of
India's population of 1.2 billion.
4. Objectives ……
• MAIN OBJECTIVES :-
• Design and realization of a Mars orbiter with a
capability to perform Earth-bound maneuvers, cruise
phase of 300 days, Mars orbit insertion / capture, and
on-orbit phase around Mars
• Deep-space communication, navigation, mission planning
and management;
• Incorporate autonomous features to handle contingency
situations.
• SECONDARYOBJECTIVES :-
• Explore Mars surface
• Checking its morphology, mineralogy and Martian
Atmosphere
5. Payload ……
• The things that goes in the space with the satellite for
checking various constituencies are known as payload. A 15
kg payload has been taken to Mars consisting of 5 things.
• Lyman-Alpha Photometer is the first device. It checks the amount of
hydrogen and Helium present in upper atmosphere.
• MSM is the second device. It checks the amount of methane.
• Mars Exosphere Neutral Composition Analyzer (MENCA) analysis the
compositions of the exosphere of mars.
• Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer will measure the temperature
of Martian Surface.
• Mars Colour Camera will provide images in different spectrums and will
give a context for other devices.
6. Achievements ……
• First organization to do this successfully in first
attempt.
• Fourth Space Agency to do this after Soviet Space
Program, European Space Agency and NASA itself.
• First Asian Nation to do this. Here, Soviet is not
counted as it took off from the region which lies in
Europe.
• Cheapest Mars Mission. Cost of our mission is
$74M. The second lowest is Phobos Grunt which is
$117M while the highest is of latest spacecraft
MAVEN of NASA which has an astonishing amount
of $671M.
7. Launching……
• The Launch of Mangalyaan was done by
the first launch pad of Satish Dhawan
Space Centre which is a rocket launch
site in Sriharikota. It was open in
1993. It is one of the two major
launch pads of SDSC (Satish Dhawan
Space Centre).
• The Mangalyaan was taken in the Polar
Satellite Launch Vehicle aka PSLV.
8. Present day situation ……
• The mangalyaan is orbiting the mars
from last fortnight. It is sending pics
from there and its payload is working
correctly. It also met NASA’s MAVEN
aircraft. But the Bad news is that the
connections are getting blocked due to
mars at some point or the other. The
eclipse also started at mars for a very
short interval of time due to the MOM.
