Garcia<br />RISE Program<br />Revised: December 2010<br />Magnetic Resonance as a tool for structural studies of membrane protein:<br />Magnetic resonance has been used as a tool for many studies in oceanography, geography, as well as military uses for location and tracking. But now it is being used as a tool to study membrane bound proteins. It works by emitting electromagnetic radiation in response to a magnetic field (Lopez, 2010). Mary Chely uses the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technique. It basically consists waves are sent and bounce of the object resembling their shape, size, and formation. Their purpose of this research and machinery is to help detect and treat medical conditions like cancer, and other internal issues. <br />She then used Electron paramagnetic resonance, which is used to detect unpaired ions. This in turn detects free radicals and other significantly small particles. Both techniques can be used to find proteins like SEC-14, a protein responsible for phospholipid metabolism and membrane trafficking. Their end goal is to see how Sec-14changes and interacts in a molecular level. The magnetic resonance tools in combination with spin labeling will help to localize and detect the Sec-14 protein.
