2. Lighting
When talking about lighting in a movie like the Descent its very
different for the viewer to be used to the lighting because of the
movie been mainly placed in a cave. Because the main source of
light is flashlights on their helmets, lighters and the camera light.
The first frame is placed no where the place just doesn't exist this frame
is of Sarah’s daughter the lighting of this is important as it focuses only
on her and makes us remember what happened to her also the
darkness behind her represents the cave.
The second picture lighting is very significant because the green shows
us the grimness of the accident and the light just shows on her so we
know the state what she is in.
The one of Sarah running though the corridor simply shows us the small
spaces of the cave and the darkness shows it too
The one of her and her friend crying is a very vital scene because the
lighting is really bright and the darkness has now gone it makes us
know that Sarah is now safe
3. Location
The location plays a big part in this clip as its based in one place which
is the hospital, the descent made this scene very good.
The first picture confuses the viewer and makes them wonder where
the girl is and in some sense it could lead to a theory where Sarah
could end up soon. The second one easily tells up that she's in hospital
and we know she's very hurt, And the location what she's in tells us that
something bad has happened.
Lastly is the corridor scene which tells up that the darkness is looming
over Sarah and makes us feel like we are in a cave too because the
location of a hospital can convoy the feeling of a cave easily
4. Props
Props play a good part in this film to help the viewer understand little
things what are happening or what have happened in the past. For
example like the first photo this shows us that Sarah is not dreaming or
anything she is actually alive those little things tell the viewer what is
going on
Lastly the last photo of the cake how it says happy birthday Jessica is
just showing us a simple overview of her birthday
5. Costume
The costumes in the descent aren't really detailed, however in the
scene where the daughter died she was wearing different clothes in
the car than In the cake scene so this can tell us that her daughter is
definitely dead maybe appearing as a ghost.
The scene where Sarah is in the hospital dress just tells up that after the
crash she has survived but she's badly hurt and she looks clueless
about where she is and possibly thinking is she dead or not.
6. Mise-en-scene
Mise-en-scene gives us the feeling that anything can happen at
anytime meaning someone getting killed, and even good
happening. Mise-en-scene can convoy a lot of different feelings
like fear at on point and then safety many directors use this to
tell the viewers minor things what have happened about the
charterer's involved for example we feel fear when Sarah is
running down the corridor with the darkness however when its
light and she's hugging her friend it shows us that’s she safe
Diegetic and non diegetic sound: non diegetic sound plays a
major part in the decent as the random echo’s in the
background strike fear in the viewers indicating something's
their in addition diegetic strikes fear to as music is vital in horrors
because by the music we know when something's coming and
if something bad is going to happen
