theory
2.Herzberg two factor theory
3.Mc Grigor theory X & Y
4.Alderfer erg theory
5.Achievement motivation theory
1.Content theory – content theory of
motivation focuses on what people need in
their life i.e., what motivates them. It attempts
to define what those motivates and needs are.
3. CONTENT THEORY –
1.Abraham H. Maslow needs theory –
He proposed that people are motivated by
predictable 5 steps hierarchy of needs.
According to Maslow, most individual are
not consciously aware of their needs, yet they
all supposing procceed up the hierarchy of
needs one level at a time.
5. 2.Herzberg two factor theory –
In 1959, Fredrick Herzberg, “proposed a two-factor
theory or the motivator hygiene theory. According to
him there are some job factors that result in job
satisfaction and dissatisfaction”
Hygiene Factor – are those factors which are
essential for existence of motivation at work place.
These do not lead to positive satisfaction for long time.
But if these factors are absent or non-existing at
workplace then they lead to dissatisfaction. It includes –
pay, company policies, working conditions, job security
and interpersonal relations.
6. Motivation factor – are those factors which
motivate the employee for superior performance, they
are also known as satisfier. Employees find these factors
intrinsically rewarding.
They include – recognition, sense of achievement,
growth and promotional opportunity, responsibility and
meaningfulness of work.
3.Mc Gregor theory (X &Y) –This theory tells us about
the perception that managers hold for this employee in a
way that they generally behave.
Theory X – it tends to believe that most employees do
not like working until avoid it as much as possible.
7. Managers needs to control threaten, punishment and
force workers to do their job.
Employees are motivated by fear and money.
Therefore, managers under theory X, tells the
employees exactly what to do and what not to do. And
generally, punishment is more common than rewards.
Theory Y –
Employee like to work there.
People enjoy working towards the goal.
Most employee seek responsibility.
Employees are motivated by variety of rewards.
Employee imagination, creativity and cleverness can be
used to solve the problem.
8. 4. Alderfer Erg theory – he says that individual can be
motivated by multiple level of needs at the same time.
He proposed that when a certain category of needs
isn’t being met people will readable their efforts to
fulfil needs in a lower category.
In Maslow theory, need must be satisfied in sequence
from bottom to upper, one at a time. This is not the case
with erg theory because here different level of needs
can be satisfied at any time.
In erg theory, if a higher-level need is not satisfied then
the person may regress to seeking to satisfy lower-level
needs, unlike in Maslow theory needs at multiple level
can be pursued at the same time.

10. 5. Mc Cleland Achievement Theory –
This theory states that every person has one of the 3 main driving motors
i.e., the need for achievement, need for affiliation and need for power.
Regardless of our gender, culture, age we all have 3 motivating drivers and
one of these will be dominant motivating driver. These drivers are
dependent on culture and life experiences.
Need for affiliation – this need concerns with establishing and
maintaining warm, close, intimate relationship with other people.
Need for achievement – this need concerns with issues of
excellence, competition, challenging goals and overcoming discoveries.
Need for power – this need concerns with making an impact on
others, influence other, change people or event and make a difference in
life.
