Acculturation and Language
How we
were
VS.
How we are
Acculturation
• What is acculturation ?
• What is the major reason behind acculturation
?
• What does acculturation have to do with
tourism and culture ?
• Impacts of acculturation ? Good or Bad ?
• Is acculturation real or happens in our context,
for e.g.. Nepal ?
Acculturation
When two cultures come into contact,
such as an immigrating family with the host
country, the process of acculturation takes
place.
In the present context acculturation has
been brought up by tourism majorly.
Acculturation is the complex interaction
between these two cultures. (Berry, 2003;
2006; Castro, 2003; Padilla, 1980)
Theron a Nunez was the first anthropologist
who coined the term Cocacolization refers
to the single culture/ traditional culture mixed
with several other cultures left by the tourist
bought by the tourist. Nunez showed how tra
ditional Mexican culture became Cocacolized.
When acculturation happens…
Acculturation mainly focuses on the
following aspects of change
• Trivialization,
• Revitalization
• Cultural drift.
Trivialization
• The term Trivialization refers to cultural
destruction.
• Many anthropologists carried out researches
in different touristic destinations and
majority of them found negative impact
of tourism in those destinations.
Whatever the negative impact they found
is as follows:
• 1. Demonstration effect
• 2. Architectural Pollution
• 3. Linguistic acculturation
• 4. Fake art/Airport art
• 5. Trinket culture or Trinketization
• 6. Xenophilia
• 7. Temponacantrism
• 8. Cocalization
• 9. Alcoholization
• 10. Prostution
• 11. Gambling
• 12. Theft, Crime
• 13. Drugs
• 14. Food Habit
• 15. Dresses
• 16. Marriage
Revitalization
• “Acculturation does not destroys culture,
rather revives or preserves it”
• For e.g. the craftsmen of Patan and Bhaktapur.
Cultural Drift
• Tourism neither destroys culture or it’s revives
the culture.
• If tourism brings culture change, it will
partially bring a change at the
destinations
Language
• Also considered as the vehicle of humanity.
• Human could never have evolved this far
without language.
• There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in
the world today and 1.2 billion speak
Mandarin
Nepal ?
• “There are 123 languages spoken as mother
tongue reported in census 2011. Nepali is
spoken as mother tongue by 44.6 percent
(11,826,953) of the total population followed
by Maithili (11.7% 3,092,530).” – Central
Bureau of Statistics (CBS)
Language and Acculturation
• Many languages are being forgotten or
abandoned because there are no one to
speak or use them.
• Purity of language is slowly being degraded
due to Acculturation because…
YO NIGGA !!!
YA GOT SOME WEED ?
At the end…
• Acculturation happens everytime. There is no
denying it but one should be careful that
• TRYING TO LOOK COOL IN FRONT OF OTHERS
MAY SOMEDAY ELIMINATE YOUR OWN
IDENTITY.
so,
• TO KNOW YOUR FUTURE, YOU MUST KNOW
YOUR PAST.
Thank You
