Three point lighting
• Three point lighting is basic form of lighting. Three point lighting
refers to key lighting, fill light as well as back lighting. key lighting is
bright and most commonly aims towards the main character in the
film. Fill light is used to reduce the shadows that the key light creates
this also balances out the colours. The backlight is placed directly
behind the, used to divide the character from the surroundings in the
frame that is being shot.
Three point lighting
Fill lighting
• Used to create a balance and to produce clear images that are
detailed and can be seen clearly by the eye. By using the right amount
of fill light you can create different effects such as brighter shadows
or darker ones. Adapting the fill lighting to create different effects,
creates different impacts on the audience. The emphasis on a certain
image reflects on its importance throughout the movie. However the
main purpose of fill lighting is to get rid of shadows or to soften the
shadow.
• Making sure that he use the right amount of light in are movie is key
as well as using the right amount of shadows. Shadows are important
in thriller movies as they help to create that so much desired eerie
effect that is very much needed to be a thriller movie.
Key lighting
• The most common and most used forms of key lighting are high key
lighting and low key lighting.
High key lighting
• When director use a high amount of fill light to key light it is called
high key lighting. This results in brighter pictures and more balance
pictures. When using a smaller amount of fill light to key light you are
creating the effect of low key lighting. You will see that high key
lighting which is commonly brighter is used more commonly in
dramas and comedies to create a happier and funnier appearance to
the scene or clip or in drama's to create a moment of heightened
drama.
• This form of light is not likely to be used to much in are genre (thriller)
this is because bright lighting isn't so important.
Low key lighting
• Low key lighting is much less brighter than high key lighting. With Low
Key Lighting you will notice that there are much more shadows and
that generally the movie has a much more darker appearance and
outlook.
• Low key lighting is ideal for are thriller genre and will certainly be
used when creating are teaser trailer. This form of lighting can be
used in genres such as thrillers, horrors and possibly action movies.
They make moments appear more intense and the lighting is great for
masking peoples identities therefore creating heightened tension.
Backlighting
• Used to highlight an object or character in the room. The audience
can notice when this effect is being used when the rest of the
background becomes blurry and the object or character is the only
thing that is clearly visible and shown in great detail.
• This will be important when creating are teaser trailer when we need
to show the audience the importance of a weapon we have the ability
to do this through blurring the rest of the background
Horror Movie Lighting
Four Point Lighting
Background lighting
• Four point lighting has the exact same setup as three point lighting
however the difference is that there is also the inclusion of background
lighting. The background lighting adds the effect of lighting up the
background section of the. Furthermore another affect that background
lighting has is that it creates distance between the background and the
main object. Background lights are usually placed behind the main subject
and are facing the background, the effect that this creates is that there
seems to be added depth in the clip.
Top lighting
• When the upper areas of a character are well lit from light that is
coming from above them.
• In are teaser trailer using top light is something that we consider
doing as it will draw attention to are main characters make them
seem scarier.
Under lighting
• Light that is shone from underneath that characters face, creating a
scary effect. Under lighting can be used in a variety of different genres
however most commonly you will see it more commonly being used
in genres such as horrors and thrillers due to the scary effect that it
creates.
Lighting
• Sharpness, brightness and darkness of a scene are all down to the
lighting present in the clip. In this clip from shutter island backlighting
the director was able to capture Leonardo Di Caprio at this particular
moment he is showing the audience that he is scared and frightened
of something.
