2. My chosen target audience is females around 16-22 but I feel that it is a magazine that
potential readers could pick up if they were interested in it. I feel that the genre and style of
my magazine is very contemporary and therefore appeals to my targeted demographic who
want up to date information on mainstream music. I targeted this certain audience as I feel
that with this demographic I new what they would want/expect to see in a mainstream
magazine. I also chose the age group of 16-22 year olds as I decided to target a social class
of C1/C2 as it is the social class that most students would be in. The type of social group I
have chosen, I feel, is reflected within the magazine articles in the magazine and the colours
that I have used. These areas were also discussed in question two.
Social Status Table:
A Upper middle class. High managerial, administrative or
professional job employment
B Middle class. Intermediate managerial, administrative
or professional job employment.
C1 Lower middle class. Supervisory or clerical and junior
management administrative or
professional job employment.
C2 Skilled working class. Skilled manual worker.
D Working class. Unskilled manual worker.
E Casual/Lowest grade workers. Pensioners and others who depend on
the welfare status for their income.
3. In the preliminary task we
created a reader profile. To do
this we had to find a reader
profile to gain inspiration for
our own and then create on
that resembles our target
audience. I chose NME reader
profile to base my reader
profile around as, although it is
not in the same genre or
gender of my magazine, I liked
the layout of it and as it is
mainly male orientated and my
magazine is female based it
helped me realise what I
should not include in my own
reader profile.
As I didn’t have a house style
form my magazine whilst doing
the preliminary task I would
want to change the colours so
that the house style of my
magazine would run though
out all the pages.
Like NME I also added images
that I thought would target my
female based audience of
around 16-22 year olds. I did
this through my research by
creating a mood board of
things you would expect to see
in a female base magazine.
Also to help me understand what should be on my reader profile I analysed one of
NME’s reader profiles so that I knew what should be on it and what is appropriate for
my certain target audience and social group of females around 16-22 in C1/C2.
4. If I were to redo my reader profile I would make sure that the colours matched my house style and that
there were more images of what my target audience like, I have created another mood board of what I
would want to see in the new reader profile if I were to make it.
5. In relation to my target audience I carried out a focus group which contained one female who
new the genre really well and two males who preferred other genres to mainstream, this
helped me chose an audience as it became clear from my own research that females were a
lot more interested in the genre. The males in the group stated that they probably wouldn’t
pick up a mainstream magazine; this prompted me to have and all female audience.
I did some photography research to help me figure out what kind of style images are put in
and what audience would like to see in the magazine. I also looked at things that I thought the
audience may like to go in the magazine, things like researching celebrity fashion, colour
schemes and examples of mainstream magazines to help me find out more about what the
audience would like to see.
