Developing your academic online presence with social media Workshop at the University of Reading led by Sue Beckingham SFHEA, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems and LEAD Associate at Sheffield Hallam University, this workshop will provide an opportunity to learn about new approaches and practical examples of using social media in higher education; and as co-learners share examples of effective practice and consider how these might be applied in your own contexts. The session will also provide participants some time and space to network and potentially make new connections. The workshop aims to provide participants with an opportunity to: Gain a better understanding of how social media can be used in a scholarly context Appreciate the value of developing a rich professional online presence Learn about opportunities for social and open informal learning through social media Appreciate five elements of ‘working out loud’ (Stepper 2015) and how these can be of value to both yourself and others Using the 5C Framework (Nerantzi and Beckingham 2014, 2015) as a lens we will consider how social media can be used to connect, communicate, curate, collaborate and create. In doing so consider the value of: Developing a digital professional persona to share scholarly achievements Cultivating your own personal learning network and co-learning communities Sharing learning journeys through working out loud Programme Tuesday 26 April 2016 10.45-11.00 Networking and registration 11.00-12.30 Becoming a Digital Scholar using social media 12.30-13.15 Lunch 13.15 -14.30 Developing a PLN and open co-learning opportunities

This presentation describes an honors colloquium offered at a private university in the U.S. which created a socially networked class experience that bridged the classroom with life outside of it. We offered an interdisciplinary, immersive, inquiry-based learning environment around the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference in Austin, culminating with student research projects and a TED-like event back on campus, after the conference. The course promoted the themes of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship at the university, while strengthening students’ communication skills within an interdisciplinary domain, leading to unique opportunities for the participating students. The course attempted to build a culture of innovation based on collaboration, interdisciplinary inquiry, and intrinsic motivation. The course built connections between the students and the 30K+ technology, innovation and entrepreneurship community that attends annually the SXSW Interactive festival. The festival brings speakers and startups in the technology, social media, business, and communications fields for five days each spring, providing attendees with a chance to see technology innovation and entrepreneurship in action as new companies are announced, and new products are launched. In the course, we asked the students to embrace distinct themes of SXSW Interactive so that each student had a unique, inspiring, and highly relevant experience. Students researched their select themes within the framework of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship contexts, heard from speakers, attended an opportunity recognition competition with other entrepreneurship students on campus, planned their conference attendance, attended SXSW sessions all day during the festival, networked with attendees and completed structured interviews, wrote about their experiences using new and traditional media, and organized a TED-like event back on campus, with presentations to faculty and fellow students about the things they learned. All the elements of their experiences were captured in individually themed ePortfolia, available online, which include the final learning reflection and synthesis.

The Xbox One, the last of the eighth generation consoles, will hit shelves in North America on Nov. 22, a week after Sony's PlayStation 4. The Microsoft gaming device was first rumored to be called the "Xbox 720" in late 2011 until its official name was announced on May 21. Our timeline details the developing news of the console as it was released, everything from the first rumors to launch day, even the outrage surrounding Microsoft's initial policy on used games. There is significant value in using Social Media and Mobile Apps in social, political and economic spheres of activity. Within these areas, social media tools such as Blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook share a common usage in supporting internal communication, collaboration, news aggregation, teaching, learning and knowledge sharing. Are there similar benefits for using social media within the spheres of Leadership and Management in Libraries? How are 21st century Library leaders utilising social media to enhance services in their organisations and connect and communicate with stakeholders? What are the opportunities and challenges associated with using social media in Libraries? This presentation seeks to address these issues. It highlights some of the core competencies (professional and personal) that is required for library leaders to function effectively in a technologically driven environment and introduces emerging trends and concepts - cloud storage, crowdfunding, makerspaces, MOOCs, news aggregation, photo and video sharing, self-publishing, social networking, video conferencing, visualization - that can be readily adopted and adapted (‘mashed up’) in libraries and other knowledge repositories. The goal is to develop and share a toolkit of resources for 21st century library leaders who are willing to use Social Media and Mobile Apps to engage their communities, reshape and add value to the effective delivery of innovative library services.

India needs highly scalable solutions and ‘public goods’ should act as a key enabler for building such solutions. IndiaStack is one such emerging system, which entrepreneurs and startups should embrace. Presence-less, paperless, cashless Service Delivery for a Billion people is a very big task. The large-scale systems needed to cost-effectively deliver such a solution would only be built with the combined participation of all parties, including government bodies and private companies or startups. The government systems will enable critical capabilities made available to entrepreneurs who could build diverse set of Apps useful in reaching the services to a wide mass of people through mobile phones.
