Setting high expectations means that teachers believe in their students' abilities, encourage students to challenge themselves, and teach in different ways to engage all learning styles. When teachers understand each student's self-expectations and help them set goals, the students are motivated to achieve higher. Research shows high expectations reliably drive higher achievement. Teachers must convey confidence, give constructive feedback, and provide appropriate challenges to support students in meeting high expectations. Setting high expectations benefits students by building self-esteem and preventing learned helplessness.
2. Overview:
Setting high expectations means that teachers
recognize that each of their students are able
to challenge themselves, students build
positive identities, and a teacher can teach in
ways to ensure every student with different
learning styles get the concept of what they are
teaching. Teachers can set high expectations
for their students by learning what a students
expects of themselves and the teacher can help
their students set their goals for success.

3. Credible Source #1:
As stated in an article “Teach Like A Champion” by Lemov, “ one consistent finding
of academic research is that high expectations are the most reliable driver of high
student achievement.” A study that was consistently discussed would be the
“Pygmalion” study (teachers were told that randomly selected groups of students
had been proven through testing to be on the brink of great academic gains), in this
study it was founded that when teachers found out the students were able to gain
more academically the teachers set higher expectations for the students with a
better academic gain and promoted learning helpness with the others. I have always
felt when a teacher encourages and set high expectations for all of their students it
gives the students a goal to set for themselves and helps with their confidence.
4. Credible
Source#2:
In the article the “Highly Effective
Teacher (2016), Ignacio “Nacho”
Estrada stated “if a child can’t learn
the way we teach, maybe we should
teach the way they learn.” That is a
positive message, it isn’t stating that
you are teaching wrong, a teacher
must find a teaching method that
works for themselves and their
students. A student growth in the
mind depends on the expectations set
for them (if a student feels they can
do nothing and get by the will exhibit
that behavior throughout their school
years.
5. Credible Source #3:
In the article “The Highly Effective Teacher” (2016), give five examples on “How to set high expectations for
students in your classroom”
1) Convey Confidence in your students- “Let students know that you believe in them and speak positively
about students to other staff.” (Conveying confidence in your students helps your students self-esteem.
2) Give opportunities to contribute- “When students are given the chance to voice their opinions and learning
in a validating atmosphere they learn better and achieve higher results.” (Students are able to set and
follow goals for themselves.)
3) Give specific feedback- don’t just tell a student “good job” tell them why they did a good job give
constructive feedback- when a student sees that their efforts aren’t going unnoticed they tend to want to
do better to keep positive feedbacks about themselves.
4) Provide high levels of support- Students need support from everywhere (teachers, family, friends, etc.) as a
teacher in order to set high expectations for your students you must show your students you support them.
5) Use the gridlock principle- “This means providing tasks that are not too easy, not too hard, but just right!”
This is where a teacher must observe their students as well as their own teaching method to find a learning
method that fits all or their students.
6. Analysis I viewed when a teacher sets high expectations for their
students the students tend to expect more of themselves
regardless the learning style they may possess. When a
teacher encourages and supports their student they are not
only helping their student set goals for themselves but they
are also helping their students gain self confidence and build
their self esteem. The three resources I read and stood out to
me explains the benefits of a teacher setting high
expectations for their students and as well explain what goes
into setting high expectations for teachers and students.
7. Connections:
When an teacher “sets high expectations” for their students they must build their students
self-esteem and encourage responsibility in their students. Setting high expectations can
work on any student with any learning style as long as the teacher is willing and motivates
their students. An example of a teacher setting high expectations would be while a teacher
may teach in a low income school where teacher generally accept low expectations of their
students a teacher may set high goals for their students and it will show through their
students because the students had the support, motivation, and goals from their teacher.
Setting high expectations keeps students from having lowered expectations of themselves,
low self-esteem, they don’t become dependant on others (cheating, always looking for the
answer without trying, etc.), and they aren’t resistant to participating in class.
8. Conclusion:
Many educational researchers have studied and observed
what “setting high expectations” for students does to a
teachers teaching method and the students learning skills.
It has been found that a “student achievement is strongly
affected by what the teacher expects of them” The Highly
Effective Teacher(2016). When a child feels unmotivated or
they can just float by their academics reflect their low
expectations of themselves. “Teachers can help students
maintain high standards by monitoring the goals set and
reinforcing high standards.” Woolfolk (2016) p. 276. A
teacher is a students greatest motivator when a student
feels unchallenged or too challenged the student may
withdraw, a teacher must set a goal for themselves and their
students to achieve in order to motivate their students to set
high expectations for themselves and achieve them.
9. Communications
with the family:
If I had a parent approach me and ask me about
why I “set high expectations” for my students,
based on the information I gathered I might
respond this way:
“Setting high expectations for my students can
encourage (motivate a student to set a goal for
themselves), build self confidence, and omit
learning helpness (the cannots or I don’t know).
Several researches have been conducted to
experiment and see what happens when a
teacher sets high expectations and when they
set low expectations for their students. A
famous experiment called “Pygmalion effect”
proved that when teachers thought they had
students with exceptional academics skills they
held the students to a higher expectation.
