2. Snake
• Denotation
– a long limbless reptile which has no eyelids,
a short tail, and jaws that are capable of
considerable extension. Some snakes have
a venomous bite.
• Connotation
– A person or action that it untrustworthy,
wily and intently malicious.
3. Flag
• Denotation
– a piece of cloth or similar material,
typically oblong or square, attachable by
one edge to a pole or rope and used as
the symbol or emblem of a country or
institution or as a decoration during public
festivities
• Connotation
– Flags can symbolize unity and
togetherness, or domination, they identify
countries and clubs and organization, if
used in different colours they can connote
peace or destruction.
4. Gun
• Denotation
– a weapon incorporating a metal tube from
which bullets, shells, or other missiles are
propelled by explosive force, typically
making a characteristic loud, sharp noise.
• Connotation
– A gun can signify death and destruction,
mass harm and danger. On the other hand, it
could represent protection and safety.
5. - The translucent neon
greens and yellows give
an alien, other-worldly
undertone to the
triangle. And the the red
border can signify
danger
- The triangle symbol itself
has recently been
portrayed as an ominous,
eerie shape that could
signify secret organizations
and conspiracy’s.
- There a group of
teenagers staring up at the
big gaping triangle in the
sky. They look like they are
recoiling in shock, but they
are still too curious to look
away. This could connote
they are on an adventure,
and were looking into the
mystery of the square
- A simple, sharp design
that is very minimalistic.
This could represent
undertones of futuristic
aspects of the game.
- The colour white is also
associated with purity
and innocence.
- The word ‘oxen free’
loosely means to come
out of hiding and to ‘be
free,’ which may be why
there is spacing between
the words. But also the
letters are connected by
one thin line, which
could convey that it isn’t
safe to do as the name
says.
- The blue and green misty
setting surrounded by
stone and boulders gives
off a sense of mystery
and enigma.
- This section of the poster
is bland and void of
people, suggesting that it
has been deserted or
abandoned.
- The two teenagers
in this section look
curios with a
ominous green light
shining there faces.
- They are wearing
placid and neutral
colours, which
signifies that they
are genuine people
with good and
honest intentions.
6. - The skull imbedded into the
front of ship implies evil and
death are on board. It
foreshadows a sense of dread
and glooming horror.
- Skulls are usually associated with
dead bodies and murder, which
could imply that getting on the
ship will result in carnage.
- The connation of skulls on ships
could suggest the movie has
something to do with pirates.
Pirates are notorious for taking
over ships, pillaging, stealing and
great heists. This could evoke the
thought that any of this will
happen in the movie.
- The ship is dark and full of
shadows. It doesn’t look
at all inviting, deterring
away visitors with its cold
and unfeeling colour
schemes of black, pale
blues and sickly-green-
whites.
- The ship is the only
object in sight which
could give the illusion
that there is nothing
around for miles and
miles.
- Even though the colour
white normally implies
purity and innocence,
when partnered with the
word ghost it signifies
something much more
eerie and sinister.
- The font is sharp and
serious, foreshadowing
the heavy and intense
narrative of the story.
- Dark clouds of all gloomy,
stormy colours are behind the
ship. This gives the
impression that a storm is
brewing in the distance. The
clouds look thunderous.
- There is a flash of neon green
lightning crackling through
the stormy sky. Even though
green lightning is a natural
phenomenon, this particular
shade is associated with
hauntings and horror.
- The fact that lightning is in
the sky definitely implies a
storm is coming, which is very
dangerous for a ship at sea.
- The words ‘SEA EVIL’ are placed under the boat at very low opacity on top
of the water. ‘SEA’ is obviously used because the film is based on water,
but the sea is also a very vast and unexplored place. This could include that
there a hidden secrets in the story.
- ‘EVIL’ is a very vehement word, which could imply that something terrible
and disturbing is on board.
7. - The sky is a mix of dark and royal
purples, suggesting that the sun is
setting but out enough to cause a
shift of colour in the night sky.
- The colour purple can sometimes
connote mystery and secrets. And
since the sky has a clouded affect,
it could be suggested that
something is to be hidden and
unseen.
- The house is all
straight lines and
angles, tall and
vast: This could
leave the
impression that it
is something to be
seen as daunting
and intimidating.
- It has a shadowy,
grey scale colour
scheme that
seems washed out
and bland. This
could mean that
the house is old
and worn.
- There are a dozen windows visible from front of the house,
and every one of them seems vacant and void of life because
of how dark they are. However, there is one window that is
glowing gold from light. Light can imply safety and warmth.
- The main door of the house is slightly creaked open, which is
unusual considering the time of day – this could evoke the
thought that an intruder has entered the premise and they are
the ones stalking around an empty house.
- The tree’s are pine,
which usually
appear
neighboured next
to other pines. The
tree’s are framing
the house, which
could imply that
the house is
surrounded by
forest in the
middle of nowhere.
- The tree’s are
shaded and pitch
black, which could
convey that
whatever is behind
them (or in the
mist of them) is
sinister in nature.
- The font is wispy, with the ends of the letters trailing off into nowhere. This
(partnered with the translucent effect and white colouring) could imply that
the narrative has something to do with ghosts or things long forgotten.
- The letters are all lowercase, which could give the impression of childlike
innocence.
- The word ‘home’ heavily suggests that the game will follow the narrative of
someone who lives in the house displayed. The word home also has a warm,
cosy feel to it, which could suggest that this place is or once was a place of
familiarity and happiness.
8. Soundtrack
• Clip 1
– This clip sounds like it comes from a couple of different types of genres –
such as horror, sci-fi or war movies.
– There is an almost metallic sounds in the beginning of the extract, which
may imply that they are on some kind of space craft or ship of some kind.
Some forms of metal can be seen as futuristic.
– The drumming sound half way through sounds almost like battle drums,
so may connote that a battle or fight is coming. Also it adds suspense, so
maybe could imply that a battle is nearing instead of already being there.
– The rumbling and buzzing sound building up from middle to end sounds
almost like a swarm of bee’s. This could suggest that a dangerous army is
forming and is getting nearer and neared towards the end of the song.
– The loud clash at the end sounds very climatic. It could represent that the
war is about to begin, or that the main big evil character has arrived or
has started an attack.
• Clip 2
– Clip 2 sounds like it come from a romance-comedy genre or perhaps a
Disney film.
– The jingling noise all the way through sounds very festive and Christmas
like. This could connote the scene of snow, Christmas decorations and
lights.
– The light, slow and high-pitched note sound jolly and endearing. It
implies that something nice, kind and subtle is going on – perhaps the
ending to a rom-com film, where the characters are left happily ever
after.
– The music almost swells up, which may give the impression that
something meaningful and nice is happening.
9. Shining
• A friendly, inviting voice narrates the main points in the film. This changes the feel of the trailer because it is hard to feel an
ounce of terror when someone is being so over-zealously jolly.
• In the beginning of the trailer, fast paced bouncy music plays over a montage of the main character struggling to write and a
young boy acting bored. The narrator says that the main character is a “writer looking for inspiration,” and that the young
boy is “looking for a dad.” this choice of wording and the happy-go-lucky music playing in the back ground immediately has
the audience empathizing with the characters and expecting a happy ending.
• The music changes to a slow, light melodised song that kind of swells around and builds up. This is effective when changing
the theme of the trailer because the audience is forced to relate and shift there emotions to match the song being played.
This could suggest that the film is a romantic comedy.
• The music again changes to an unmistakably upbeat melody, with lyrics about family, home and hearts. Along with this
music, scenes from the movie are cut up and arranged to display the main characters at their happiest moments doing very
family friendly things – such as smiling the car, parents being romantic, the mother playing with her son. They edit out all of
the terror that the original movie evokes.
• Finally, they change the title to a curvy, smooth and white font. This could connote a sense of comfort and warmth because
of the lack of sharpness to the words.
10. Scary Mary
• The beginning of the trailer opens with the song ‘stay awake’ from the original movie but edited to sound slight slower and
echo-filled, which leaves a more eerie impression suggesting a creepy theme to the trailer.
• The long pauses between clips builds up suspense, especially when the clips that follow are edited to be darker and slower
than the original ones. In the long pauses between clips, text appears suggesting that Mary Poppins is to be dreaded and
feared. This helps perpetuate the thought that this movie is in the horror category.
• The main character is dressed in a black trench coat and a red scarf, a look that seems daunting and harrowing when put
into the context of horror film. Black is a colour used often with villainous characters because it connotes with evil and red
can sometimes connote gore and blood.
• A high pitched, quick song plays over the rest of the trailer while edited clips of the movie and shown and cut up to look
menacing and horror inducing. This connotes with the horror movie genre because when the tension builds in the movie, it
makes the audience wander what dreadful thing is going to happen next.

including flashbacks/forwards.

18. Clip Analysis
• Costume – There is a clear connotation of evil when it come to Darth Vaders costume. He is
head to toe in dark black, completely void of colour. This connotes that he is evil and
apathetic – the only other colour on him is his lightsabre which is ruby red, you associate this
colour with blood and gore.
• Lighting – When Darth Vader is using the force against Ezra, the lightsabre casts shadows on
his face that add a gloomy, harrowing depth to Ezra’s face, as if he knows he’s in danger.
• Dialogue - When Ezra and Kanan are chasing after the ship for rescue, someone from on
board yells at them to move fast by saying “Come on, Come on!” – These words are
encouraging, whilst also desperate because the character doesn’t want them to get hurt.
• Music – When Darth Vader enters the scene, the music almost ceases. This could represent
the shock of his appearance and how it has made time stand still for the opposing characters.
It also makes the scene more suspenseful and has the audience to waiting to see what
happens next.
