2. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
1. The construction industry is being transformed to meet the
new demands of the twenty-first century (Levy, 2007).
2. Time is vitally important for all participant in the
construction process.
3. Improper time management, many problems will occur such
as extension of time or time overrun.
4. Time overrun become the most general problem in
construction industry worldwide (Olawale & Sun, 2010)
5. A myriad of details are considered in planning and
developing a realistic schedule, and then in monitoring
the progress of the project.
3. Aim
To assess the application of MS Project in
construction program of works for Centre of Excellence
with a view of optimizing the progress of building
production process.
Objectives
1. To develop a construction program of works for
Centre of excellence.
2. To compare the construction program of works
developed by this study with that developed by the
contractors.
3. To evaluate the level of implementation and
compliance of the construction program of works.
4. LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Construction Project Life Cycle
2. Construction Programme For Building Projects
3. CPM and PERT Networks
4. Bar/Gantt Chart
5. Line-of-Balance (LOB)
6. Developing The Construction Programme
5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
1. The case study was selected using a checklist of a set of
formulated criteria.
2. The use of checklist to compare the developed and the
actual POW.
3. The use of MS Project software to evaluate the
implementation and measure progress of work; by
identifying:
a. Project Status
b. Late Activities/Task
c. Resource Allocations
6. Microsoft Project Steps Overview
1. Starting a new plan and
setting its start date
2. Entering the plan’s title
and other properties
3. Enter task names,
durations, and start and
finish values
4. Create summary tasks to
outline a task list.
5. Resource assignment
6. Viewing the project’s
critical path
7. PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
1. The project:
A five-storey semi-
circular shaped hostel
building with an internal
radius of 24.5m located at
NDA Kaduna.
2. Calculation Sheet:
Quantities are extracted
directly from working
drawings.
8. CPW on MS Project
1. Red bars: Duration of activities
2. Yellow line: Progress of work recorded.
3. Blue: Summary Task.
9. Comparison of Programmes of
Works
1. MS Project comparison report.
2. Shows the differences in duration and start day.
3. Difference increasingly negative.
10. Checklist for Project status
As at July, 2016:
The percentage of duration of
the overall project completed is
calculated to be (124%), having
an overall scheduled duration of
(676days), with over (835days)
being exhausted hence creating
a time overrun of over
(160days).
11. LATE ACTIVITIES/TASK
Tasks that are late as compared to the status date. A task is
late if its finish date has passed or it is not progressing as
planned.
As at July 2016:
1. (35%) of activities
completed.
2. (65%) of activities
of the overall
project are
automatically late.

As at July, 2016:
1. Out of cumulative overall
work of (22,964hrs),
(9,464hrs; 41%) of work
have been completed
leaving (13,500hrs; 59%)
of work remaining.

13. SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
1. The MS project software was used in this study to develop a
new construction programme of works with improved
efficiency for CBN Centre of Excellence.
2. The entire project is on time overrun of over 160days.
The study shows that over 41% of the amount of work
has been completed.
3. The Study also shows that on 35% of the entire project is
completed while 65% of the entire project activities are late
tasks.
14. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The application of MS Project software in the evaluation of
CPW enhances construction planning process, aids in fast
tracking, easy monitoring and handling of projects by project
managers.
2. Further exploration of MS Projects resource management
tool such as the leveling options, controlling the resource
pool and resource over-allocation.
3. Implementation of MS projects cost management tool to
monitor cost and budget, cash flow and cost overruns of
projects.
