7. ‘World Happiness Report
‘Announces the Happiest
Countries in the World
By Regina Sienra on April 6, 2023

What makes the people of a certain country happier than others? Is it the weather? The
quality of life? The World Happiness Report has dedicated itself to answering these
questions. To find the world's happiest countries, the organization measures income,
health, freedom, generosity, and the absence of corruption. After putting all the numbers
together, one Nordic country took the crown, yet again. Finland has been named the
happiest country in the world for the sixth year in a row.
8. “The findings are clear. The ethos of a country matters—are people trustworthy,
generous, and mutually supportive? The institutions also matter—are people
free to make important life decisions? And the material conditions of life
matter—both income and health,” the team behind the World Happiness Report
writes. “The development of virtuous behaviors needs a supportive social and
institutional environment if it is to result in widespread happiness.”
So what countries are the happiest in the world? After Finland, Denmark comes
in second and Iceland comes third, rounding the podium. Israel, breaking away
from Nordic countries, is in fourth, followed by the Netherlands in fifth place. The
highest-ranked non-European country is New Zealand, which takes the 10th
place. Canada is ranked 13th, while the United States is in 15th place, climbing a
spot from last year.
For their annual rankings, The World Happiness Report relies mostly on data
from the main life evaluation question in the Gallup World Poll. “The natural way
to measure a nation’s happiness is to ask a nationally-representative sample of
people how satisfied they are with their lives these days,” states the executive
summary of the report. Participants are asked to rate their current lives on a
scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the best and 0 being the worst. Finland's score was
7.804, leading with a good advantage over Denmark's 7.586. Niger came last with
a 4.501 grade.
The World Happiness Report has been working on making it an operational
objective for governments by drawing from self-reported perceptions of
satisfaction. The report states, “More and more people have come to believe that
our success as countries should be judged by the happiness of our people.”
Finland has been named the happiest
country in the world by the World
Happiness Report for the sixth year
in a row.
10. The United States landed in 15th
place, which is actually a one spot
improvement from the previous year.

“Miracle Baby” Rescued From Turkish
Earthquake Rubble Reunited With Mom After
54 Days
AUTHOR Ally Mauch
11. It was one of the most tragic stories to come out of the deadly earthquakes in Syria and Turkey in
February. And now it’s being hailed as a miracle.
The weeks-old baby girl who was rescued after being buried in the rubble in Turkey for 128
hours has been reunited with her mother, who for months was thought to have died in the
disaster.
The “miracle baby” was initially put under the care of the state in the capital city of Ankara, and
named Gizem, meaning mystery, by nurses. DNA analysis, however, revealed that her mother,
Yasemin Begdaş, was being treated for her injuries at a hospital about 300 miles away, in the
city of Adana.
With a quick private flight, the baby — whose real name is Vetin Begdaş — was finally
with her mother again after 54 days apart.
12. “To witness their happiness is an emotional and beautiful moment for us, too. Uniting a
mother with her child is one of the most precious deeds in the world,” Turkey’s Minister
of Family and Social Services, Derya Yanik, said in a video posted to Twitter, per a
translation from CBS News.
RANKED #1 City to Live in America
The Woodlands, Texas
Credit: Prince Pazziuagan/ Shutterstock
Located just miles north of downtown Houston, the Woodlands has been ranked as
the number 1 best city to live in America — that’s a lofty claim, but not an outlandish
one. Despite the phrase “everything is bigger in Texas,” the Woodlands actually offers a
small-town feel that can be hard to find elsewhere throughout the Lone Star State. The
city’s homey atmosphere doesn’t mean that the Woodlands is devoid of culture,
however. The Woodlands is home to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion amphitheater,
offering music lovers an idyllic outdoor concert setting, and is also known for a colossal
downtown mall complex catering to any need. For nature lovers, consider taking a
kayak out on the Woodlands waterway that runs through the center of town and
witnessing the Woodlands’ beauty for yourself. Who knows, it may just end up being
the perfect place to follow trends and lay down some roots with a forever home.
13. Sulphur Springs Elementary receives grant for
MindCave
By: Amber Brophy-April 7, 2023
SulSulphur Springs Elementary School was recently awarded a grant from the
Tennessee Valley Authority and Bicentennial Volunteers Inc. for the purpose of further
developing the STEM opportunities that they offer to their students.
According to a press release from the TVA, teachers from across a seven-state region
applied for grant funding of up to $5,000 for science, technology, engineering and math
related education projects. The TVA accepted 238 of these applications, saying that
they are “committed to supporting STEM education to help develop today’s students
into tomorrow’s engineers, scientists and IT professionals.”
According to Sulphur Springs Elementary principal Dr. David Little, the school plans to
use the grant funds to support their new STEAM MindCave in the library media center.
Last year, Sulphur Springs unveiled a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Lab that
serves their students in grades five through eight. The new MindCave is designed to
offer these same STEM opportunities to the school’s younger students.
the MindCave, students in grades kindergarten to fourth get the opportunity to work
with a rotating selection of STEM-based hands-on activities. Some of these include the
popular VEX robotics, Snap Circuits, Magna-Tiles and Keva Planks. To incorporate the
arts, the STEAM MindCave also has stations for things like poetry, language arts and
social studies.
“What we're seeing here is that the students absolutely thrive on working in small
groups with these interactive stations, which really reinforces their daily goals of being
respectful, confident, encouraging and kind,” said Little. “It also falls in alignment with
our school vision of students being empowered to solve problems.”
14. The MindCave is available to students during their library period and is overseen by the
school’s library media specialist Serena Yarber. Yarber said that soon the school hopes
to be able to make the MindCave’s materials available for teachers to check out for
classroom use. The MindCave will also be made available for teachers to bring their
classes to for added instruction during various units.
The STEAM MindCave has been at Sulphur Springs for about a month, and both Little
and Yarber said that the K-4 students are enjoying the hands-on learning opportunities
that it offers.
“The kids are very excited about what they're learning, and they want to be in this space
every day,” said Little. “It makes learning fun for them.”
Mark Cuban Reveals Mavericks’ Long-Term Plans
for Kyrie Irving
By: Jason Ounpraseuth -April 6, 2023
Kyrie Irving has not been the boost Mark Cuban hoped he’d be when the Mavericks traded
for the All-NBA guard on Feb. 8, and his future in Dallas has been left up in the air.
The Mavericks are 8-11 since the trade with the Brooklyn Nets, as of Thursday. Irving has
missed seven games due to injury, and Dallas is 3-4 in those games, so the issue hasn’t
entirely been on 31-year-old.
But what was supposed to be a promising development in Luka Doncic’s career has turned
to disappointment that could be capped off with a failure to make the postseason. The
Oklahoma City Thunder hold the tiebreaker for the final play-in spot over Dallas, as of
Thursday.
Jason Kidd needs to be better as a head coach, especially helping his team play better
defense. Irving, though, historically hasn’t been the strongest defender.
Despite the issues, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was optimistic about keeping his team’s
core together.
“I don’t think it’s J-Kidd’s problem that we didn’t have an identity,” Cuban told reporters
Wednesday, per The Athletic’s Tim Cato. “The game changed in ways we didn’t expect it
to change, so I blew it. It was on me personally because the game changed in terms of the
take fouls and the speed of the game, and where you need to be defensively. We just didn’t
make the right changes that we needed to.”
