2. Notes From Mrs. Mizell
Dear Parents,
On behalf of the teachers and staff of the Central Elementary School
(CES), I would like to welcome you. We have lots of happenings going on at
Central. Our PTA ladies are busy with our membership drive and t-shirt
sales. Reading & Writing Assessments are being given as well as math
screeners. Children are settling into routines both at home and at school.
Reading each night makes a difference in school performance. Stay informed
of Central’s events by following us on Twitter and/or like us on Facebook. As
I continue as principal at Central Elementary, I will work diligently with
parents and faculty to foster an atmosphere that promotes a learning
community that is child centered. Working as a team we will move forward in
our mission to create a warm, caring, disciplined, and challenging environment
in which all students can learn and reach their highest potential becoming
responsible members of society. Although we strongly believe in academic
excellence, we also feel that learning must be fun and rewarding for each
child. By working together, students, parents/guardians, and staff can make
Central Elementary School an exciting and enjoyable place to learn. I am
blessed to work with the Central staff, families, and community.

• Reading- Our unit in reading is called Bigger Books; Bigger Reading Muscles. We will
be working on using all that we know to read books that are longer.
• Writing- Our unit in writing is How-To Books. We will be writing step by step
directions on how to do different things. For example how to pop popcorn! We will use
words like first, then, next, and last to help us write!
• Math- Our unit is called Build a Block, Build a Wall. We will combine 3-D shapes to
make other shapes.
• Science/S.S.- Geography, The Mitten, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, The Human Body

10. Reading:
We are starting our reading unit on the American Revolution!
This will be an exciting unit for your child! We will be learning
about different battles, important people, and the causes of the
war.
Writing:
While we are researching and learning about the
American Revolution in reading, we will be writing
about what we have learned in our new writing unit!
Math:
We are working with numbers 0-10,000!!! We are learning
new strategies when adding and subtracting!! Please keep
working on your multiplication and division!!
Social Studies:
We are learning about the American Revolution!

11. 5th Grade
Reading
Students are studying
argumentative texts. They
will be using strategies to
identify claims, reasons,
and evidence of an
argument.
Writing
Students will research a
topic they feel strongly
about. Then they debate
their peers about that
topic.
Math:
Students are learning
how to compare
fractions and decimals.
They will also be adding
and subtracting
decimals.
Science:
Students are studying
Earth and Sun
relationships. They will
observe the position of
the sun, earth, and
moon as well as the
effects of the positions
of these objects.
Social Studies:
Students are studying
Westward Expansion
and obstacles pioneers
overcame to establish
the USA.

12. Jump Rope for Heart
Kickoff Date: January 5th
Envelopes Due: January 12th
Jump Rope for Heart raises awareness of heart disease and all money raised goes to
The American Heart Association for research and prevention. Jump Rope for Heart
teaches the students the importance of heart-healthy habits-a foundation for the rest
of their lives.
Here’s how it works:
* Students will receive their fundraising envelope.
* Ask family and friends if they’d like to donate.
* Student’s will be preforming several different types of jump rope skills in
PE classes during this time.
* Collect all donations and turn their envelope into the office by the deadline.
* Students will receive various prizes dependent upon funds raised.
Thank you so much for all of you help and participation as well as supporting our
efforts to raise money for heart research for people of all ages.
